6 Years After Jude Law’s MCU Movie Debut, I Think There’s 1 Way Marvel Could Nail His Return

Jude Law’s Captain Marvel character was notably absent from the film’s sequel, but the MCU can still nail his return in an upcoming project. Captain Marvel set plenty of records for Marvel during its 2019 release. It was the studio’s first female-led movie with Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson starring in the тιтular role, and it went on to gross over $1.1 billion at the box office. Alongside Larson, the cast featured other big names, such as Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury, Annette Bening as Mar-Vell, and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos.

One of the big draws for the film was Law’s role as Yon-Rogg, the commander of Starforce and Carol Danvers’ mentor. It felt like the two characters were being set up for a lasting teacher-student dynamic. However, it’s later revealed that the Kree’s war against the Skrulls was not as black-and-white as Carol believed, and she turns on Yon-Rogg and the Kree. While Carol ultimately doesn’t kill her former mentor, she sends him back to Hala with a warning. Law hasn’t appeared in the MCU since then, which is odd considering that his character was deliberately left alive.

Jude Law’s MCU Character Has Been Seemingly Alive But Off-Screen For Many Years Now

Captain Marvel Sparred Yon-Rogg At The End Of Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers in a stand off against Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel

Though Yon-Rogg wasn’t the main villain of Captain Marvel, his betrayal feels the most personal considering the close relationship that he had with Carol. He was one of the few individuals she trusted while on Hala, and she had no idea he was weaponizing her for the Kree’s benefit. Despite all the negative emotions, Captain Marvel lets Yon-Rogg live during their last confrontation. Although Yon-Rogg tries goading her into a full-blown fight, she remarks that she has nothing to prove and won’t stoop to his level.

It’s highly unlikely that Marvel would keep him alive at the end of Captain Marvel just to kill him off-screen.

Yon-Rogg’s fate is left uncertain, and it remains to be confirmed even 6 years after Captain Marvel’s release. He essentially failed his mission for the Kree, so it’s possible that he was reprimanded in some way upon returning home. His absence from The Marvels could be explained by the studio wanting to take a different direction with the sequel, but, oddly, he hasn’t even been referenced in so long. It’s highly unlikely that Marvel would keep him alive at the end of Captain Marvel just to kill him off-screen, so it’s safe to ᴀssume that he’s still alive.

Jude Law’s Return As Yon-Rogg In Avengers: Doomsday Or Secret Wars Would Perfectly Pay Off The Stories Of Captain Marvel & The Marvels At The Same Time

The Marvels Have Clear Ties To The Upcoming Avengers Films

The characters of the Captain Marvel franchise are going to play some key roles in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. In The Marvels’ mid-credits scene, Monica Rambeau is transported to an alternative universe where the X-Men reside. Kelsey Grammer’s cameo as Beast was a huge surprise to everyone, and it has become an even more crucial role. Grammer and other original X-Men actors are confirmed to return for Doomsday, which hopefully means that there will finally be answers regarding his involvement in The Marvels.

Monica’s fate has clear ties to the events of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, so it’d make sense if characters from the Captain Marvel franchise stepped up again. One of these could be Yon-Rogg considering he’s one character that is presumably still alive. The fight against Doctor Doom will be one of galactic proportions, so Hala and the Kree may hear about it. It may be a stretch, but if Captain Marvel is involved with Doomsday, this could be the chance for Yon-Rogg and the Kree to redeem themselves.

Why Yon-Rogg Needs To Return In The MCU

His Return Would Be Full Circle For Captain Marvel

Jude Law's Yon-Rogg is defeated by Captain Marvel in Captain Marvel (2019)

The MCU has been under fire for having some underwhelming villains, and that’s because of the studio’s bad habit of killing them after only one appearance. For the few that do make it through the project, the studio struggles to pay off villain stories with actual interesting developments. The fact that Yon-Rogg ended Captain Marvel alive already avoids one trope, and the MCU would be smart to bring him back, especially with a talented actor like Law. Doomsday and Secret Wars would be the best place to do so, considering the films’ relation to The Marvels either way.

If the upcoming Avengers films are going to deal with content from The Marvels, then Captain Marvel should at least play some part in the story. She didn’t really get to play a big part in the last Avengers films, so it’d be nice if she gets some focus this time around. It’d make sense to include story elements that answer old mysteries about the character as well as celebrate her character arc to show how much she’s grown since Captain Marvel, and bringing Yon-Rogg back among the growing cast could be part of the answer.
