Box Office: Sinners Sets More Records & Hits Crucial Global Milestone, Ben Affleck’s Returning Actioner Settles For Second Place

Sinners has beaten the compeтιтion, which includes the Ben Affleck action movie The Accountant 2, during its record-setting second weekend. The new horror movie stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack, who must face a terrifying evil in their Mississippi hometown in the 1930s. The Sinners release had an auspicious beginning, earning a $48 million haul at the domestic box office that gave it the highest-grossing Easter weekend debut for an R-rated movie in history, in addition to seeing it toppling the box office juggernaut A Minecraft Movie from its perch at No. 1 on the chart.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, Sinners is projected to earn a 3-day total of $42 million by the end of its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office. This is more than enough for it to take No. 1 at the domestic box office for the second weekend in a row. It has handily bested The Accountant 2, as the belated sequel (which follows Affleck’s 2016 movie The Accountant, about autistic action hero Christian Wolff) is projected to gross $25 million, which will see it debut at No. 2 ahead of the fourth weekend of A Minecraft Movie at No. 4 and the 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith at No. 3.

Meanwhile, Sinners‘ global total has exploded past the $100 million milestone, hitting a cumulative gross of $127.5 million worldwide. It has set multiple records during its second weekend, including falling just 13% at the domestic box office for the second-smallest week 2 drop in history for an R-rated horror movie (behind Heart Eyes, which rose 19%). It is also director Ryan Coogler’s best second weekend ever for a non-Marvel movie and the second-best sophomore weekend for an R-rated horror movie in general (behind 2017’s It, which made $60 million at a 51.3% drop).

What This Means For Sinners

It Stands Out Among Other Horror тιтles

Any way it is measured, the Sinners box office is astounding. Although it had already earned one of the best debut weekends ever for an R-rated horror movie, its sophomore weekend drop is even more impressive, because the horror genre is noted for generally having severe week 2 drops of 50% or more. In fact, of the five biggest week 2 drops for major wide releases playing in 3,000 theaters or more, three of those тιтles were horror movies, two of which were part of major, long-running film franchises. Below, see a breakdown of the performance of those releases:

тιтle

Opening Weekend

Week 2 Drop

Joker: Folie à Deux (2024)

$37.7 million

-81.4%

Friday the 13th (2009)

$40.6 million

-80.4%

Halloween Ends (2022)

$40 million

-80%

The Marvels (2023)

$46.1 million

-78.1%

Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023)

$80 million

-76.2%

Additionally, Sinners did not have the same boost as Heart Eyes. The Valentine-themed slasher had its sophomore frame during Valentine’s Day weekend, leading to a natural holiday boost. While the new movie’s performance is resoundingly impressive, the reported budget of Sinners is $90 million, which most likely means that its break-even point is somewhere around $225 million. Reaching that total is still a challenge, but the movie’s unprecedented audience hold – and the fact that it is the only horror movie to earn an A CinemaScore – could mean that it will turn a profit by the end of its run.

Our Take On The Weekend Box Office

Sinners’ No. 1 Streak Will Probably End (But Its Success Won’t)

While Sinners has overtaken The Accountant 2, Revenge of the Sith, A Minecraft Movie, and Until Dawn to land a two-week streak at No. 1, that streak seems destined to end in its third weekend. That is because May 2 sees the debut of the upcoming Thunderbolts*, the year’s second Marvel Cinematic Universe movie after February’s Captain America: Brave New World (which is currently the third highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide). However, the horror movie could still operate as counterprogramming to the PG-13 superhero тιтle, continuing to show strong audience hold and climb toward its break-even point.
