Until Dawn 2 Chances Get Cautious Response From Director Despite His Ideas For A Follow-Up

The article contains major spoilers for Until Dawn ending.Until Dawn director David F. Sandberg spoke about potentially directing a sequel to the horror film. The video game adaptation ends with its protagonists surviving until the тιтular dawn, having bested monsters, masked killers, and a twisted psychiatrist. However, Until Dawn has an open ending as the final scene shows a car pulling into the driveway of the home from which the main characters had just escaped, hinting that the murderous time loop will restart with the arrival of these new victims.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sandberg gave a cautious response about creating a Until Dawn sequel. While he stated that he is “always open to anything,” he expressed hesitancy about jumping into a second movie, which is a general feeling he has with any completed project. Sandberg emphasized that Until Dawn offers plenty of opportunities to continue the story as one could do nearly “anything” with it. Check out his response below:

I’m always open to anything. I just want to focus on one movie, get it done, and then take a break to catch my breath before seeing what happens. But, for sure, you could do much more with Until Dawn. You could again have different horror genres involving another group of people. You could do almost anything with this, so it’s certainly possible.

But whenever I finish a movie, I feel like I never want to do a movie again. (Laughs.) It’s such a challenge, and it’s so tough. There’s so much anxiety and lack of sleep, but then I just can’t stay away from it. I have to make movies. So, right now, I feel like, “I don’t want to make another movie ever,” but then I’ll do another movie.

What This Means For An Until Dawn Sequel

A Sequel May Not Come For A While

Sandberg’s response to a potential sequel indicates that he is not necessarily finished with the Until Dawn series. The video game itself has a spin-off, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, which shows that there is potential to expand the cinematic universe as well. The movie’s chaotic ending also opens the door for a sequel to pick up right where the story finished. However, Sandberg made it clear that he needs a break from filmmaking before he continues with more Until Dawn.

It’s fair to ᴀssume that he will return to Until Dawn down the line, especially if the adaptation becomes a box-office success. Additionally, his belief that “you can do much more with Until Dawn” shows that he has considered potential routes for the story to take. His decision to end the film by showing that the cycle of death will continue for a new group of characters, different from Until Dawn‘s cast, sets up a strong base for a sequel, or even multiple sequels. The video game offers nearly endless choices for a player to make, creating several stories that a filmmaker could adapt to the big screen.

Though Sandberg may need a momentary break from directing, it appears that his time with the Until Dawn franchise is most likely not over yet. His open atтιтude towards creating a sequel, as well as his reflection that the film has the potential to go in seemingly limitless directions, show that he has real enthusiasm. The film’s ending hints that there is already consideration about what happens after its heroes escape a relentless cycle of death, so a sequel is possible. Only time will tell if Sandberg will expand the cinematic universe of Until Dawn, but it seems like a follow-up film is on the distant horizon.
