Sinners’ Alternate Ending & Post-Credits Details Revealed As Star Explains Why They Were Cut

Warning! Major spoilers ahead for Sinners.

Sinners

star Miles Caton reveals an alternate ending exists and shares new context regarding the post-credits scene. Directed by Ryan Coogler and serving as his follow-up to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), the Warner Bros. horror movie stars Michael B. Jordan as Smoke and Stack, twin brothers who return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta only to find themselves the target of a vampire. Caton makes his acting debut in the Sinners cast as Sammie, aka Preacher Boy, with the character one of the few to survive the events of the film.

In a recent interview with GQ, Caton touches on one of the last scenes in Sinners of Sammie choosing to hold onto his guitar and pursue a life of music. The actor reveals that Coogler sH๏τ several different versions of the movie’s ending, but the one that stuck was the one that put a big decision on Sammie’s shoulders about his musical future, which also ties into the film’s key themes. Check out Caton’s comment below:

There were a couple different scenes that we sH๏τ for that moment. Him going back to the church, and him holding the guitar and holding onto it, it’s like, “Do I give this up, or is there an alternative?” I think that was the decision there. Also, that we’re all sinners. We’re all trying to make better choices, better decisions every day, and so that’s something that we see throughout the film that I think is beautifully written.

Caton is then asked about how the movie’s post-credits scene of Sammie playing a blues rendition of “This Little Light of Mine” came about, and he reveals that Sammie’s preacher father was originally present during the moment:

That was something that we sH๏τ earlier in filming, and it was originally Sammie looking to his father after playing in the church. We were thinking of what could we do to kind of do our rendition of “This Little Light of Mine,” so me and [composer Ludwig Göransson] had been working together to come up with our sound, and how it would be on a resonator guitar, and that’s what we came up with.

What This Means For Sinners

Coogler’s Creative Choices Have Paid Off

Sinners reviews have been glowing from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the Coogler film currently enjoys a 98% critics’ score and a 97% Popcornmeter score, speaking to just how positively received it has been. Though Jordan, in his dual roles, takes center stage for much of the movie, Caton is crucial to the story, not just as an actor but as a singer and a musician. It’s Sammie’s ability to “pierce the veil,” after all, that makes him a target for Jack O’Connell’s Remmick, and Caton’s musical abilities are on full display throughout the movie.

As for the alternate versions of the Sinners ending, it’s possible that the different versions Caton mentions will be included as extras on the movie’s home media release, alongside other deleted scenes. No date has been provided just yet for either the VOD or physical media releases, however, as the film only just hit theaters and has been a hit. Sinners opened to $48 million domestically and is now up to $71.5 million in the U.S. and Canada. Globally, the film is now at $87 million, a strong result for an original, R-rated horror movie.

Our Take On Sinners’ Alternate Ending

The Theatrical Ending Sets Up A Great Additional Scene

Sammie’s decision to hold onto his guitar and pursue a life of music at the end of the film ultimately opens the door for the Sinners mid-credit scene, which carries a lot more narrative weight than the post-credits scene does. The scene of an older Sammie in the early ’90s as he is visited by Stack and Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) is a movie highlight despite its position after the credits start to roll.

Famous Blues musician Buddy Guy plays the older version of Sammie in the mid-credits scene.

The entire cast is a major strength in Sinners, but Caton is undoubtedly the biggest surprise. Without him, the movie arguably doesn’t work nearly as well, as the entire premise rests upon the idea that his voice and his music can be a powerful cosmic force. It’s unclear what’s next for Caton, but Sinners has certainly set him up for an exciting career.
