Avengers: Doomsday will be the next big team-up movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but looking back at the breathtaking success of Avengers: Endgame, and especially the reviews that the movie received, it is hard to imagine Doomsday living up. While Doomsday has put together a cast that sees so many performers from so many different eras of Marvel, it is unclear how well all of these components will fit into the new movie. With such a high bar to reach, it is genuinely difficult to imagine how Doomsday could reach the same heights as Endgame.
Fortunately, it is possible. With the X-Men appearing in Doomsday alongside team members from Marvel’s other new franchises – including the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts – there is clearly excitement ahead for the MCU. Following Captain America’s new mission to reᴀssemble the Avengers, there is great room and potential for the new film to create something truly special within the Marvel Universe. Living up to the success of Endgame, however, might be too high a bar to clear.
Avengers: Endgame Sets A Lot Of High Bars For Avengers: Doomsday To Try And Match Or Beat
The Film Was Beloved And Made An Incredible Amount Of Money
Avengers: Endgame is one of the most successful and beloved movies of all time, and it is difficult to imagine Doomsday performing as well or better. While several MCU movies have grossed over $1 billion, only two have broken the $2 billion mark. Avengers: Endgame made $2.7 billion and is currently the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. While this goes to show how popular these Marvel team-up films can be, it also sets an incredible financial benchmark for the new film.
It will be nearly impossible for any movie to live up to the standards that Marvel has set for themselves, but the franchise should certainly try. However, the most important thing for Marvel to do is to simply make an excellent film, versus trying to meet any financial benchmarks specifically. Still, even this will be a challenge for the new movie to live up to, as it will certainly be compared to the previous franchise entry. Endgame received an Academy Award nomination, and the film holds an 8.4 rating on IMDB. Another review aggregator, however, suggests even greater love for the film.
Avengers: Endgame’s Rotten Tomatoes Review Ranking May Be An Even Bigger Challenge For Avengers: Doomsday Than Trying To Live Up To Its Colossal Box Office Results
Doomsday Will Be Profitable, But It Is Hard To Imagine The Movie Being As Good As Endgame
Avengers: Endgame has set many records, and currently holds an incredible 94% score with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This makes it the second-highest-reviewed film on the platform in the entire franchise, only behind Black Panther. While Doomsday is almost certain to be profitable and even to make excellent money at the box office due to its star power and brand recognition alone, it will be difficult for the new film to live up to the standard of quality set by Endgame.
In addition to the critic score, Endgame also holds a 90% audience score. It is clear that critics and audiences alike are unified in their adoration for the film, which saw the perfect ending to the Infinity Saga. With such a great buildup over a decade of films, Endgame truly felt like an enormous culmination. While Marvel has reᴀssembled much of the same team for Doomsday, including Robert Downey Jr. and the Russos, it is hard to imagine this new film feeling nearly as big and important.
How Avengers: Doomsday Can Best Try To Match Avengers: Endgame’s Review Score
The New Film Will Be At Its Best If It Tries To Do Its Own Thing
Doomsday is already set to be a unique entry in the Avengers franchise, especially after some of the biggest Marvel names were missing from the Doomsday cast announcement. Following this, it is important that Doomsday not try to directly replicate the successes of Infinity War and Endgame. By being its own film, and telling its own unique multiversal story, Doomsday will have the best chance of connecting with both critics and audiences. With different heroes, and a multiversal plot, this already seems likely.
Endgame was so special because it was so unique. The film went out of its way to tell a big and expansive story with incredible stakes, which gave some genuine finality to the MCU story. Doomsday will not be able to do this in the same way, as the film also needs to set up for a sequel in Avengers: Secret Wars. Instead, Doomsday could look to Infinity War for inspiration regarding setting up an enormous story, although they should still be careful to avoid what Avengers: Age of Ultron did and replicate past successes too closely.
Avengers: Doomsday has a lot to live up to, but there are reasons to have faith in the project. Most Avengers films so far have been incredibly satisfying, and the Russos have already made some of the best Marvel movies of all time. Living up to the financial success of Endgame is a difficult task, but hoping to match its critical result is even more challenging. Instead, the filmmakers need to focus on telling the best story possible with Avengers: Doomsday on its own, which will hopefully result in another special Marvel film.
