Tom Hanks’ War Movie With 78% RT Score Gets Surprise Sequel Update As Filming Start & Plot Details Revealed

Greyhound gets a surprise sequel update as a filming start and plot details have been revealed. Written by and starring Tom Hanks, the World War II film follows an inexperienced U.S. Navy commander leading an Allied convoy of warships being stalked by German submarines during the Battle of the Atlantic, with the cast also including Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue. Greyhound was released on Apple TV+ in 2020 and, after becoming one of their biggest movies ever, a sequel entered development in 2022.

Now, according to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, the Greyhound sequel is set to begin filming in January 2026 in Sydney, Australia. Hanks will reprise his role as Commander Krause and has written the script once again, with director Aaron Schneider also returning behind the camera alongside producer Gary Goetzman. The sequel is set to follow Krause and his crew from the beaches of Normandy to the Pacific Ocean as they help turn the tide of the war.

Discussions are currently underway with key cast members from the original movie to return. This includes Stephen Graham, fresh off rave reviews for Netflix’s hit miniseries Adolescence. While no deals have been finalized yet, there’s strong optimism that the main cast will reprise their roles.

What This Means For The Greyhound Sequel

Tom Hanks Provides Another Perspective On D-Day

Greyhound takes place mostly in the Mid-Atlantic gap, also known as the “Black Pit,” where ships were out of range of protective air cover. The Greyhound sequel will shift the setting to the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the Pacific Ocean, where protective air cover was extensive. In turn, the Greyhound sequel will be the latest Tom Hanks project to cover the Normandy invasion, as Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan famously begins with the U.S. Army landing at Omaha Beach.

The HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, which Hanks and Spielberg produced, follows the 101st Airborne Division parachuting behind enemy lines during the early hours of D-Day to support the landings at Utah Beach. Now, the Greyound sequel will provide another perspective on the Normandy invasion, this time from US Navy Commander Krause and his crew. The Navy was critical in coordinating and executing the largest amphibious ᴀssault in history, from transporting soldiers, vehicles, and supplies to destroying German defenses.

The HBO miniseries The Pacific, produced by Hanks and Spielberg, follows the Marines in the Pacific Theater.

Our Take On The Greyhound Sequel

Apple Should Release It In Theaters

Greyhound was released on Apple TV+ in 2020 during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and had the biggest debut weekend of any program in the platform’s history, with figures comparable to a summer blockbuster. In turn, Apple should now release the Greyhound sequel in theaters, as they have with Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and other movies, to give audiences the most immersive experience possible. War movies thrive on the big screen with better sound, where every explosion and gunsH๏τ can be felt in your chest.

Greyhound was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound, a testament to how great its audio was. The sequel promises even bigger battles and better sound, from Normandy to the Pacific. The Greyhound sequel deserves a theatrical release, where the scale and sound can be fully appreciated the way it was meant to be.
