Sinners Box Office Hits Key Global Milestone As Michael B. Jordan’s Vampire Movie Sees Huge Boost Into Its Second Week

Sinners‘ box office hits a key global milestone as the movie sees a big boost heading into its second weekend. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role – representing their fifth collaboration after Fruitvale Station, Creed, and both Black Panther movies – the new horror film follows twin brothers who return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta in 1932 and are confronted by a supernatural evil. Sinners‘ cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

Now, after nearly one week in theaters, the movie has hit a key global milestone. Per The Numbers, Sinners has now reached $87 million at the worldwide box office, which is getting close to its budget of $90 million. At the time of writing, its total cume breaks down to $71,508,836 domestically and $15,496,000 internationally.

What Sinners’ Box Office Milestone Means For The Movie

It Marks Another Accomplishment

This is just the latest accomplishment at the box office for Sinners. Released in theaters on April 18, it was projected to make about $30-40 million in its opening weekend, but overperformed those projections with a $48 million domestic debut, finishing first in a surprising upset over A Minecraft Movie, which had been dominating the box office for three weeks up until that point. Its debut was the best opening weekend for an original movie since Jordan Peele’s Us in 2019 and the best Easter weekend debut for an R-rated movie in history.

While Sinners‘ box office is nearing its $90 million budget, its path to profitability is much more complicated than that. Some publications have claimed the movie needs to make between $170-185 million to break even, taking not only its $90 million production costs into account, but Ryan Coogler’s first-dollar gross and several other factors. However, other industry insiders estimate that its break-even point is much higher, ranging from $200-225 million, with Puck even putting it as high as $300 million, with an estimated $50-60 million spent on marketing.

Our Take On Sinners’ Box Office Milestone

It’s A Big Boost Heading Into Its Second Weekend

Sinners‘ box office getting close to its $90 million budget should provide a big boost heading into its second weekend. It was already enjoying great word of mouth, receiving staggering 97% and 98% Rotten Tomatoes scores and becoming the first horror movie in history to receive an A CinemaScore. However, for it to become a box office success and truly be considered a win for original movies, it will need to leverage this positive word of mouth into a strong second weekend. Whether Sinners can do that remains to be seen.
