Blumhouse’s Horror Reboot Becomes Streaming Hit After Disappointing $34M Box Office

When it comes to horror, Blumhouse is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. The production company has built a name for itself with its steady stream of low-budget horror movies over the past 20 years, with 2007’s Paranormal Activity marking the film that really put Blumhouse on the map. In the 2010s, the company released hits like Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Insidious (2011), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Sinister (2012), The Purge (2013), Ouija (2014), Split (2017), and Get Out (2017), among others.

Moving into the 2020s, Blumhouse hasn’t slowed down, sometimes releasing more than 10 movies a year through distributors like Universal Pictures, Lionsgate, Focus Features, Sony Pictures Releasing, and Amazon MGM Studios. The company recently saw success with тιтles like M3GAN (2023), Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023), and Speak No Evil (2024). Not every Blumhouse movie, however, is a winner, and one early 2025 release came and went in theaters with relatively little fanfare.

Wolf Man Finds Redemption On Streaming

The Blumhouse Film Had A Disappointing Theatrical Run

Wolf Man

has become a major hit on streaming after its poor performance at the box office. Directed by Leigh Whannel, the Blumhouse movie serves as a reboot of the classic Universal monster, with Christopher Abbott taking on the тιтular role. The film, which also stars Julia Garner and Matilda Firth, follows a family at a remote farmhouse who come under attack by a mysterious animal, with the father subsequently beginning a monstrous transformation. Wolf Man reviews were ultimately mixed from critics, and the film grossed only $34 million at the box office.

Now, though, Whannell’s film is redeeming itself on streaming, as FlixPatrol reveals that Wolf Man is the number one movie on Peacock in the U.S., as of writing. The Blumhouse тιтle beats some major releases on the top 10 list, including Wicked (2024), Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022), Hop (2011), and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012). What This Means For Wolf Man

The Blumhouse Film’s Reception Explained

Wolf Man only just released on streaming on April 18, meaning it’s not entirely surprising to see it appear on the top 10 list, but taking the number one position is notable. Carrying an estimated budget of $25 million, Wolf Man may have been looking at a breakeven point of $62 million or more, a goal it clearly fell far short of. VOD performance may have helped to bridge this gap, but the reboot seems unlikely to become a success for Blumhouse.

Though Whannell directed the well-received and successful The Invisible Man (2020) reboot, he clearly wasn’t able to replicate that movie’s positive reception with his latest venture. On Rotten Tomatoes, Wolf Man has lackluster scores from both critics and audiences at 50% and 56%, respectively, with key complaints being that movie’s slower pace and lack of scares. It remains to be seen whether Wolf Man‘s poor performance killed any chances of future Universal monster reboots, but audiences are evidently now enjoying the film more on streaming.
