Angelina Jolie’s $16M Box Office Disappointment Becomes A Surprise Netflix Hit 23 Years Later

Angelina Jolie is one of the best actresses alive, but she’s taken a step back from starring in major movies in recent years. The actress broke out for her performance as a young girl battling mental illness in 1999’s Girl, Interrupted, which won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. From there, it was her role as the тιтular heroine in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, reprising the role in the 2003 sequel subтιтled The Cradle of Life, that established her as an action star, enjoying continued success in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt.

Jolie captured critical acclaim once again for her performances in A Mighty Heart and Clint Eastwood’s Changeling, the latter earning her a second Oscar nomination, this time for a lead role, for her performance as a mother who is united with a boy she claims is not her missing son and is eventually confined to a psychiatric ward. In 2024, Jolie starred in the Netflix movie Maria as the тιтular opera singer Maria Callas and earned praise for her performance, but fell short of receiving another Oscar nomination. However, it’s another Angelina Jolie movie that’s become a hit on Netflix.

Life Or Something Like It Becomes A Surprise Netflix Hit

It Ranks 3rd For This Week

Life or Something Like It has become a surprise hit on Netflix. Directed by Stephen Herek, best known for Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, the 2002 romantic dramedy stars Angelina Jolie as a television reporter who, after interviewing a psychic who tells her she will die in seven days and that her existence is meaningless, begins to re-examine her superficial life and priorities. Edward Burns co-stars alongside Tony Shalhoub, Christian Kane, James Gammon, Stockard Channing, Gregory Itzin, Veena Sood, Jesse James Rutherford, and more.

Now, over two decades after its release, the Angelina Jolie movie has become a surprise hit on Netflix. Life or Something Like It ranks third on Netflix’s Global Top 10 movies for the week of April 16-22 with 5.5 million views and 9.6 million hours viewed. It ranks below The Life List, Meet the Khumalos, and above Oklahoma City Bombing: American Terror, Rise of the Guardians, The Croods, Despicable Me 4, Minions, The Boss Baby, and Despicable Me 3.

Life or Something Like It is in Netflix’s Top 10 movies in 24 countries this week, including the United States, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong.

Our Take On Life Or Something Like It’s Netflix Success

The whims of Netflix viewers are often baffling, and Life or Something Like It landing in the Global Top 10 is a perfect example. It’s a largely forgotten film that received negative reviews for being too forced and predictable to effectively deliver its message about appreciating life’s simple moments, holding 28% and 44% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. It also disappointed at the box office with $16 million against its $40 million budget. However, perhaps Life or Something Like It becoming a surprise hit on Netflix is purely a testament to Angelina Jolie’s enduring star power.
