Sinners’ Star Michael B. Jordan Details How His Late Co-Star Chadwick Boseman Helped Elevate His Performance

Sinners star Michael B. Jordan opens up about how his late friend and Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman helped shape his performance. Jordan rose to prominence starring in Ryan Coogler’s directorial debut Fruitvale Station before achieving global stardom playing Adonis “Donnie” Creed in the Rocky spinoff trilogy Creed. He reunited with Coogler to play Erik Killmonger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Black Panther, which featured Boseman as the тιтular hero, and returned to the role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever following Boseman’s death.

In an interview with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Jordan detailed how his approach to playing twins Smoke and Stack in Sinners (his fifth collaboration with Coogler) was influenced by Boseman. In describing how this was the first time he was able to play fully fleshed-out characters, Jordan revealed that Coogler challenged him by referencing Boseman. He revealed that it was an emotional exchange, but the director didn’t have to mention it again, and Jordan felt his late friend’s influence. Check out Jordan’s full comments below:

Smoke and Stack know exactly who they are. They’re not changing, they’re through and through grown men. And that was the first time I got a chance to play a fully developed man. And so I took the opportunity to build them out that way and to go the extra mile, surround myself with the tools that I needed to prepare and stay in it.

Chadwick Boseman means a lot to us, and once Ryan challenged me by asking, what would Chad be doing right now? And sh*t, man, it broke us up, man. It broke us up, meaning emotionally. But he ain’t had to say nothing else after that. That was one of the ʙuттons that he could push. And I felt [Chadwick] around me during this.

What This Means For Jordan’s Sinners Performance

He Used The Inspiration To Channel Two Complex Roles

Playing identical twins with differing personalities and quirks is challenging for any actor, and Jordan clearly wanted to push himself. From his comments, it is clear that he used his memories and experiences with Boseman to help inform his performances, and to push him into new spaces. The energy, presence, and range Boseman possessed made him a strong performer, and it makes sense that Jordan will have found inspiration and guidance from his older co-star, possibly viewing Boseman as some kind of mentor.

In Black Panther, Boseman and Jordan played both enemies and cousins.

The fact that Coogler also directed both men, and has maintained a strong working relationship with Jordan, would also have helped the two as they ventured into an emotional creative space while thinking about how the loss of their friend might impact how to present Smoke and Stack. The fact that Jordan has appeared in every Coogler movie shows the strength of their creative bond. It seems incredibly likely, if not certain, that the two men are keen to keep the memory and legacy of Boseman alive through their movies.

Our Take On Jordan’s Sinners Role & Boseman’s Influence

Sinners Is One Of Coogler & Jordan’s Best

Jordan is one of the most interesting and accomplished actors in the industry right now, and it is clear that Boseman has had a strong influence on his career. Sinners is already set to be one of Jordan’s best movies, and Boseman’s influence can be felt throughout it. For as long as Jordan maintains a strong working relationship with Coogler, it feels likely that Boseman’s influence will be clear to see throughout the careers of both. Sinners is posting a strong box office run so far, and Jordan’s experiences with Boseman have helped him push his performance to new heights.
