Did Jennifer Lawrence Use A Body Double For No Hard Feelings’ ɴuᴅᴇ Scene?

Jennifer Lawrence’s No Hard Feelings ɴuᴅᴇ moment in the new raunchy comedy has left many viewers wondering how the outrageous scene was pulled off. The Sєx comedy stars Lawrence as Maddie Barker, a down-on-her-luck Uber driver living in the Hamptons who finds an unusual way to obtain a car after hers has been repossessed. Maddie agrees to date a wealthy couple’s awkward young adult son in exchange for a car, a premise which eventually leads to the NSFW ɴuᴅᴇ beach fight in No Hard Feelings, one of the year’s most unforgettable scenes.

Despite some inevitable backlash to the film’s boundary-pushing humor, No Hard Feelings has been generally well-received by audiences, particularly due to Lawrence’s outstanding performance. Lawrence has made it clear that she was completely on board with the ɴuᴅᴇ scene and personally regards it as one of many hilarious Sєx-charged scenes in the film. Based on the premise of the movie alone, it’s no surprise that Lawrence in the R-rated No Hard Feelings is fully committed to making herself vulnerable for the sake of comedy.

Jennifer Lawrence Did Not Use A Body Double In No Hard Feelings

The Production Ensured Safety And Comfort Were Top-Priority

Jennifer Lawrence did not use a body double in No Hard Feelings during any part of filming, even in the notorious beach fight scene that showed her fully naked. The scene features both Maddie and Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) skinny-dipping at the beach when they realize that a group of rambunctious teens are stealing their clothes onshore. Maddie charges out of the ocean in pursuit of the pranksters and proceeds to hilariously fight them in order to get her and Percy’s clothes back.

Lawrence’s beach fight scene was filmed with absolute professionalism and all possible measures to ensure that everyone was comfortable, including professional intimacy coordinators on a closed set. Although Lawrence certainly could have opted to use a body double for the memorable scene, she chose to do it herself.

What The Cast & Crew Said About The Jennifer Lawrence ɴuᴅᴇ Scene

Lawrence Was Committed To The Scene Despite Concerns From Others

Unsurprisingly, the beach scene in No Hard Feelings has become the most talked-about moment in the movie and has already cemented itself as a truly great comedic moment in movies. As funny as it is, the idea behind having to film the moment surely would have been daunting for any actor, even an Oscar winner like Lawrence. However, as it turns out, Lawrence was one of the few people who needed to be convinced that she should do the scene. The actor told Variety:

Everyone in my life and my team is doing the right thing and going, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure? Are you sure?’ I didn’t even have a second thought. It was hilarious to me.

Lawrence’s commitment to the moment simply because it was the funniest choice is another terrific sign of the actor’s comedic sensibilities, which shine in this role. However, it seems that part of the comfort that Lawrence had with the scene came from the tone of the movie set, which was one of support and safety. Even outside of this scene, No Hard Feelings is filled with some raunchy moments, and Percy actor Andrew Barth Feldman shared that there was never a moment where the actors had to feel uncomfortable:

“We became so close instantly that nothing ever felt weird or unsafe. It was entirely professional.”

Director Gene Stupnitsky also took an interesting approach to making the scene, ensuring that the nudity was not exploitative and used simply for comedic effect. He explains that the scene of Lawrence naked in the water before the beach fight is sH๏τ in the typical alluring and teasing way, with the audience only being shown her from the neck up. He then explained how he used that tantalizing moment to throw it back at the audience with the next reveal (via GQ):

“It’s almost like the audience is punished for seeing her naked. There’s nothing Sєxy about the nudity. It’s all pure rage and violence. And I think that’s what makes it funny.”

No Hard Feelings’ Beach Fight Scene Shows Jennifer Lawrence’s Commitment To Comedy

Lawrence’s Versatility As An Actor Shines Through In Comedies And Dramas

Jennifer Lawrence stuck by her decision to appear in the scene to the fullest extent because she believed it was funny — and that’s the purpose of the comedy film, to push boundaries and make the audience laugh. Her choice ultimately proves her commitment to comedy and contributes to her popular image as one of the most transparent and down-to-earth celebrities in Hollywood.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

American Hustle (2013)

No Hard Feelings (2023)

This is also not the first time that Lawrence has appeared ɴuᴅᴇ on camera, as her 2018 spy-thriller Red Sparrow also includes explicit scenes. Speaking about those, she referenced a fear of being judged for nudity (especially relevant after personal pH๏τos of her leaked in 2014), and how doing ɴuᴅᴇ scenes allowed her to move past that (via Variety).

The insecurity and fear of being judged for getting ɴuᴅᴇ, what I went through, should that dictate decisions I make for the rest of my life? This movie changed that and I didn’t even realize how important changing that mentality was until it was done,

The movie ended up being another awards contender, despite its raunchy material, as Lawrence received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, which reaffirms that her previous success in comedic roles such as American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook is still relevant to this day. No Hard Feelings is a bold reminder that Lawrence remains fully devoted to landing the punchline even if she is best known for more hard-hitting dramas.

Why The ɴuᴅᴇ Scene Is So Important To No Hard Feelings

It Reverses A Problematic Trend In Raunchy Comedies

In addition to being absolutely hilarious, there’s a deeper meaning to Jennifer Lawrence’s ɴuᴅᴇ scene in No Hard Feelings. Firstly, it represents exactly who Maddie is as a character — a bold, confident woman who doesn’t shy away from anything. This is a direct contrast to the meek Percy, who’s so anxious that he almost never leaves his family home. The scene also foreshadows how much Maddie will grow to care for Percy and the lengths she’ll go to for him, like when she jumps on the hood of his car toward the end of No Hard Feelings.

However, the beach scene is important beyond just the context of the movie. Raunchy comedies have historically exploited female nudity, as the scenes are often framed through the male gaze and meant to тιтillate a straight male audience. Iconic raunchy comedy American Pie has aged poorly in many ways, but one of the biggest is the scene involving Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth), an attractive exchange student. In the movie, dorky protagonist Jim (Jason Biggs) invites Nadia over to his house and sets up a webcam so he can secretly watch her undress. Not only is this creepy and illegal, but Jim accidentally livestreams the naked Nadia to his entire class.

This couldn’t be more different than No Hard Feelings‘ ɴuᴅᴇ scene. In contrast, there’s nothing Sєxual or objectifying about it, as Maddie is simply fighting to get her and Percy’s clothes back. She’s not being pᴀssively oggled by slobbering horny men, either. Rather, the scene shows her agency as someone who refuses to let others push her around. Hopefully this is the start of a new trend, as raunch comedies need more Maddies.
