The Netherfield Girls: Cast, Story & Everything We Know About The Netflix Movie

Quick Links

Netflix will be turning a literary classic into a contemporary tale with The Netherfield Girls. The streamer has had a lot of success with their original content in recent years, especially with genre series like Stranger Things and period romance adaptations like Bridgerton. The Netherfield Girls, however, is set to be a Netflix original movie.

The movie will be a modern adaptation of a Jane Austen classic. Jane Austen’s novels have been adapted for the screen regularly since the 1930s, with varying degrees of success by different studios. Details have been kept relatively under wraps about the movie since its original announcement, but it is in active development for the streaming service.

The Netherfield Girls has been confirmed by Variety. Variety made the original announcement for the movie in 2021, detailing that Netflix had optioned the script from writer Becca Gleason. At the time, Gleason was mostly known for her work on short films.

The Netherfield Girls Cast

The first announced cast member for The Netherfield Girls is Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Ramakrishnan got her breakout role from Netflix in the coming-of-age series Never Have I Ever in the lead role of Indian American high schooler Devi. Since then, she has also done a lot of voice over work in movies like Turning Red and the My Little Pony franchise. She made her feature film debut in the satire Slanted in 2025.

In The Netherfield Girls, Ramakrishnan is set to star as a modern-day version of Pride and Prejudice’s Elizabeth Bennet. She confirmed her casting via Instagram.

While the rest of the cast has not been announced yet, the director has. Becca Gleason will be directing her own script for Netflix. She did the same with her feature directorial debut Summer ‘03 starring Joey King in 2018. Most recently, however, Gleason has been a consulting director and writer for Amazon series The Summer I Turned Pretty, so she is no stranger to coming-of-age stories or love stories.

The Netherfield Girls Story Details

The Netherfield Girls is set to be a “fresh and contemporary” take on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Though there have been many adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, including a Bollywood version, a version with zombies, and several Hallmark Channel original movies that have strayed from the source material, the best-known adaptations are the BBC miniseries and the 2005 feature film, both of which stay very close to the novels.

The Netherfield Girls, on the other hand, is being compared to adaptations like Easy A and 10 Things I Hate About You. While the former adapted Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter (and metatextually addressed the book within the movie), the latter adapted William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Both have become teen rom-com classics and are some of the best teen movies ever made.

The original Pride and Prejudice sees Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters attending balls throughout the social season in the early 1800s as they fall in love, or in Elizabeth’s case, in hate. Austen’s novels were known for criticizing societal norms of the time, but adaptations of her work are known better for their love stories. The Netherfield Girls will bring both aspects of her tale into the modern day, not unlike Clueless, which provided a modern adaptation of Austen’s Emma.

The Netherfield Girls gets its name from Netherfield Park, the estate being leased to the character Charles Bingley in the novel and the location for much of the original story’s events.
