A new release action movie is continuing a negative box office trend for Disney. In recent years, Disney and their various brands (which include Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, and Searchlight Pictures) have had huge ups and downs at the global box office. For instance, 2023 was marked by a number of mᴀssive disappointments ranging from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (which reportedly lost $143 million) to The Marvels (which is the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movie) and Haunted Mansion (which grossed $117.5 million against a $150 million budget).
Disney seemed to recover as 2024 saw them release a number of major hits such as ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, Moana 2, and Inside Out 2. However, 2025 has started off with another major bust for the company, as their live-action Snow White remake, which reportedly cost roughly $250 million, has so far grossed less than $200 million worldwide after a month in theaters. Now, their newest action movie is set to continue that unfortunate trend.
The Amateur Is Struggling To Break Even
The Rami Malek Action Movie Cost $60 Million
The Amateur is turning out a disappointing gross during its second weekend. The new 20th Century Studios action movie stars Rami Malek as Charlie Heller, a cryptographer for the CIA who seeks revenge on the people responsible for the murder of his wife (Rachel Brosnahan). The Amateur release kicked off on April 11, during the second weekend of A Minecraft Movie. While it was expected to debut below the smash hit video game adaptation, it actually debuted at No. 3 rather than No. 2, falling behind the record-breaking faith-based animated hit The King of Kings during its opening weekend.
The cast of The Amateur also includes Laurence Fishburne, Julianne Nicholson, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, and Jon Bernthal.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, The Amateur is projected to close out its sophomore weekend in theaters by hitting a cumulative worldwide total of $64 million. This gross, which comes from a $27 million domestic haul and $37 million from international markets, just barely scrapes past the movie’s reported $60 million budget, but is still nowhere close to its estimated break-even point, which is most likely somewhere around $150 million. Because 20th Century Studios is owned by Disney, this adds a new box office disappointment to the Disney roster after the severe underperformance of Snow White.
Our Take On The Amateur Box Office
Disney Will Probably Recover By The End Of 2025
While The Amateur seems destined to be their second splashy disappointment in a row, Disney will most likely recover by the end of the year. Across their various brands, they have a number of releases scheduled that seem destined to become substantial hits. This includes Zootopia 2 (which is the sequel to a billion-dollar movie), Avatar: Fire and Ash (which follows the first and third highest-grossing movies of all time), the live-action Lilo & Sтιтch (which brings one of their most-merchandised characters to life), and more.
