“Julianne & I Would Fantasize About That”: Why A Big Lebowski Sequel Will Likely Never Happen Despite Stars’ Interest Explained By Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges explains why The Big Lebowski is unlikely to have a sequel, despite interest from him and other stars. The comedy, helmed by Joel and Ethan Coen, premiered in 1998 and follows Jeff “the Dude” Lebowski (portrayed by Bridges), who learns that a millionaire of the same name resides in Los Angeles. When a case of mistaken idenтιтy leads to their meeting, the Dude agrees to help Lebowski in retrieving his seemingly endangered wife. Along with Bridges, the movie’s cast includes David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

While at The Big Lebowski Screening: An Evening with The Dude (via Daily Mail), Bridges revealed that he and Moore would be interested in a sequel, having previously talked about it when they worked on Seventh Son. Unfortunately, he explained that the Coen Brothers would likely not make a follow-up, adding that “I don’t think that’s their style.” If they presented him with an opportunity, though, he would be on board. Read Bridges’ comments below:

Of course. Julianne [Moore] and I would fantasize about that. We did another movie together, Seventh Son, she played a witch in that movie. And we would often say, ‘Gee it’s all set up for a sequel.’ I don’t think the brothers are going to do that. I don’t think that’s their style. But I must say, they surprise us all the time… If they called me up and said, ‘Hey let’s do it again,’ I’d say, ‘Absolutely, come on.’

What This Means For The Big Lebowski

Could A Potential Sequel Work?

As The Big Lebowski progressed, what began as a misunderstanding became a cluster of strange and chaotic adventures. Bridges, in his portrayal of an unemployed, nonchalant bowler, has impacted the movie’s longevity and is a particular source of humor. Following its release, the film was praised by audiences, holding a score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, and garnered a loyal fanbase. Should the Coen Brothers ever decide to revisit The Big Lebowski, interest from Bridges and Moore, who played Maude, an artist and daughter of Lebowski, could be an early promising sign.

Apart from uncertainty surrounding the Coen Brothers and their involvement, a sequel to the original movie would need a compelling story. When The Big Lebowski ended, it was revealed that Lebowski had embezzled money, and that his wife was never abducted. Considering that Maude was likely expecting a child after sleeping with the Dude, and that she appeared in the “Gutterballs” dream sequence, a follow-up could potentially explore their dynamic and how it may have evolved.

Our Take On The Big Lebowski Sequel

While Uncertain, There Is Potential For Success

It has been nearly 30 years since The Big Lebowski premiered, and while it might not have generated a notable box office, the following it has accumulated is impressive. Bridges and Moore continue to appear in big movies, proving they can draw audiences, and their returns could make a possible follow-up successful. However, the Coens would be instrumental as well, and based on Bridges’ latest comments, it seems unlikely that they will entertain a sequel.
