Hayden Christensen’s Reaction To The Most Outlandish Padme Theory Goes Viral, & I’m Not Surprised

During Star Wars Celebration 2025, Anakin Skywalker actor Hayden Christensen addressed a Padmé Amidala theory that has been circulating for years—but he certainly isn’t buying it. Despite Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith being released in theaters 20 years ago, Padmé and Anakin’s relationship remains a focus in Star Wars movies and TV shows. In fact, even in light of how tragically this story ended, many still see Padmé and Anakin as one of Star Wars’ best relationships. Yet, Hayden Christensen is here to dispel one shocking Padmé theory.

During an interview at Star Wars Celebration 2025, Hayden Christensen spoke about the theory that Padmé was really having an affair with Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that was the cause of Anakin’s intense jealousy in Revenge of the Sith. Christensen clearly isn’t buying into this theory, though, given he called it “pretty outlandish” in this video posted on X by rotsanakins.

While it’s obvious this theory doesn’t hold water in Hayden Christensen’s view, there is a bit of truth to this Star Wars theory, although not quite in the way it’s often discussed.

George Lucas Did Actually Seem To Consider A Love Triangle

Lucas Toyed With This Idea In The Prequel Trilogy

Padme, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Anakin on Naboo in The Phantom Menace

Shockingly, George Lucas did reportedly consider a love triangle between Padmé, Anakin, and Obi-Wan in the prequel trilogy. One of many absurd Star Wars ideas Lucas cut, this love triangle wouldn’t have involved Padmé cheating on Anakin with Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith, but it would have established some awkward dynamics early on in the prequels that would have conceivably led to jealousy on Anakin’s part. Specifically, Padmé was going to initially have a crush on Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

This isn’t exactly the kind of love triangle the theory Christensen is referencing describes, but it would have meant a very different context for Padmé and Anakin’s relationship and all that transpires in Revenge of the Sith. After all, in the end, Anakin’s rage on Mustafar isn’t about romantic jealousy—he has just been consumed by the dark side because he is so obsessed with keeping Padmé alive. Hilariously, this isn’t the first time Christensen has commented on this theory, as he once laughed about it in an interview in a way some felt showed Anakin’s personality.

Our Take On The Padmé / Obi-Wan Romance Theory

We’re With Hayden Christensen On This One

I’m frankly relieved George Lucas never incorporated this love triangle into the prequel trilogy. Padmé and Anakin’s relationship was painful, compelling, and complex enough without this added layer, and I actually believe this would have cheapened their story in the end by making their love less believable. Part of what makes their relationship so effective on screen is the fact that they really did love each other; that love just tragically spelled their doom in the end.

We also did get a version of this story (though much less dramatic, as it didn’t involve Anakin’s best friend and mentor Obi-Wan), with Rush Clovis in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In that arc, Padmé is revealed to have a former love interest, and Anakin experiences explosive jealousy, going so far as to physically beat Rush at one point. In that sense, we still get to see Anakin grappling with these feelings, but it doesn’t have anything to do with this absurd Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala theory described by Hayden Christensen at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
