With the original Dumb and Dumber being considered a comedy classic and the sequel largely seen as a mᴀssive disappointment, there are a lot of questions surrounding Dumb and Dumber 3. Released in 1994, Dumb and Dumber served as the directorial debut for filmmaking brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly, who also wrote the screenplay, based on an idea from John Hughes. The movie stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd and Harry, two dim-witted best friends who set out on a road trip to return a briefcase to a woman and end up accidentally embroiled in a ransom plot.

The Farrelly Brothers Think It’s Possible

As of now, there has been no official announcement or confirmation that Dumb and Dumber 3 is happening. However, that does not mean that fans can’t be optimistic about it getting made someday. Despite the disappointment of Dumb and Dumber To, there seems to be considerable interest from the original creators, Bobby and Peter Farrelly. While promoting their holiday movie Dear Santa in 2024, the Farrelly brothers were asked about Dumb and Dumber 3, confirming it is a possibility:

Bobby Farrelly: We could never rule out maybe doing another Dumb and Dumber, and this year’s the 30th anniversary. Maybe at the 40th anniversary, just because we love Jim [Carrey] and Jeff [Daniels] so much. We have so much fun making those that we could revisit that, for sure.



Peter Farrelly: And Jim wanted to call it Gum and Gummier.

Dumb and Dumber To marked the last time the Farrelly brothers directed a movie together, with Peter Farrelly going off on his solo career and winning an Oscar winner with Green Book, while Bobby Farrelly made his solo directing debut in Champions with Woody Harrelson, followed by Dear Santa. Despite this, the brothers still work closely together, and it seems that returning to the movie that launched their careers could bring them back to the co-directing chair.

Would Jeff Daniels And Jim Carrey Return?

While there was a prequel Dumb and Dumber movie, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, that cast two new actors in the main roles, the Farrelly brothers seem to be wisely approaching the possibility of a third movie with the understanding that it would only work with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels returning. That is a sentiment shared by Daniels, who expressed enthusiasm in coming back so long as it was with the original team reuniting (via The Tonight Show):

Jim and the Farrelly brothers are great people to be with. I’d be there on Monday.

Jim Carrey is a bigger question mark when it comes to returning for Dumb and Dumber 3. Carrey announced his retirement from acting in 2022. Since then, the actor has returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so it is possible that he would return for another franchise role that he clearly has a lot of affection for.

The Farrelly brothers’ comment that Carrey came up with the name Gum and Gummier does suggest the idea was discussed, and Daniels revealed to Newsweek that Carrey felt they should return to the roles when they are 90. Time will tell how serious he was.

Dumb And Dumber To Teased A Sequel

With no confirmation about the movie actually happening, there aren’t any Dumb and Dumber 3 story details available. However, Jim Carrey’s idea of revisiting Harry and Lloyd as older men is a terrific one that is ripe with comedic potential. No matter their characters’ ages, with both the first movie and its sequel dealing with Harry and Lloyd on a cross-country road trip, it is likely that the third movie would carry on this tradition, as well as a storyline about Harry and Lloyd’s friendship being tested by a romance.

Dumb and Dumber To also included a post-credit scene that could give some hints to the third movie’s premise. The scene sees Harry and Lloyd driving down the road and absent-mindedly tossing their milkshakes behind them, hitting a following truck. It turns out that the truck is being driven by their old enemy, Sea Bᴀss (with hockey player Cam Neely reprising his role from the first movie). Angered by the incident, Sea Bᴀss bears down on the friends before the screen cuts to a тιтle card for Dumb and Dumber For supposedly being released in 2034.

The scene is clearly a gag and doesn’t really set up a sequel too effectively, as too much time would have pᴀssed for the movie to pick up right from that moment. However, the tease of a 2034 release would make sense as it marks the 40th anniversary of Dumb and Dumber and the 20th anniversary of Dumb and Dumber To.
