How Long Was Jack Black’s Steve Stuck In The Overworld In A Minecraft Movie?

Warning: Minor SPOILERS for A Minecraft Movie.

Because A Minecraft Movie transitions from one joke to another so quickly, not everyone might stop to think how long Steve’s actually been stuck here. It’s not exactly news that Minecraft has long been considered one of the best video games of all time. As such, it should come as no big surprise that A Minecraft Movie’s Easter eggs are almost too many to number. But what’s particularly curious is that a couple of these Easter eggs imply that Steve’s been trapped in the Overworld for quite some time.

Clearly, the movie’s Easter eggs have been working to its benefit. A Minecraft Movie’s box office speaks for itself, considering the film made $313 million in its opening weekend alone. It’s already made more than enough to profit since then. While a lot of that can be credited to the movie’s sense of humor and shoutouts to the original game, the script also pays some very interesting attention to detail. For those wondering about the film’s overall timeline, there are only a couple of details that need to be considered.

Steve Might Have Been Trapped In The Overworld For About 16 Years

An Easy-To-Miss Detail Provides A Clue

It’s never stated how long Steve spends in the Overworld during A Minecraft Movie. Because Jason Momoa’s Garrett Garrison receives an eviction notice dated September 23, 2025, it can be ᴀssumed that the bulk of the film takes place in the present (and a few months in the future, to boot). However, Minecraft introduced Steve’s character in the Java version of the game back in 2009, and there’s a theory that Black’s character entered the Overworld at the same time. At the very least, A Minecraft Movie’s post-credits tease gives a new character enough time to move into Steve’s house.

The film also shows Steve’s office at the very beginning of the movie, and none of the computers look particularly modern. In fact, Minecraft would probably be at the higher end of games that most of them could run. More importantly, it’s hard to believe Steve knows as much about crafting as he does if Garrett’s storyline picks up immediately where Steve’s intro leaves off. Things like learning Minecraft’s water bucket MLG should take time to learn for a newcomer. The longer he’s spent there, the more his expertise makes sense.

How Many Days In Overworld Time Steve Has Been Stuck In A Minecraft Movie

No Wonder He’s Been Able To Learn So Much

Jack Black as Steve in A Minecraft Movie

Certainly, the 16 years between 2009 and 2025 should be ample time for Steve to learn about things such as water buckets, chicken jockeys, and Endermen. But by Overworld standards, he’s technically been there a lot longer. A Minecraft Movie preserves Minecraft’s 20-minute day cycles. Since there are 525,600 minutes in a year, that would mean that Steve’s been stuck in the Overworld for 420,480 days by Minecraft standards. This comes out to exactly 1,152 years, including leap years.

This has intriguing implications. There’s already been a soft confirmation of Minecraft 2, but there’s some debate over what that film might look like. Because the game allows infinite players to create their own worlds, there’s the chance that the sequel to A Minecraft Movie could follow a new canon. Still, with time moving so much faster in the Overworld, Steve could also return to a much different world than the one he left without losing any of the core cast.
