Star Wars Confirms 6 Long-Awaited Movies In Development

Six upcoming Star Wars movies remain in development. The iconic science fiction franchise kicked off in 1977, spawning a vast multimedia empire. The theatrical movies in the franchise have largely been limited to the flagship trilogies, though in recent years there has been more experimentation with feature-length spinoffs and prequels including Rogue One and Solo. However, in spite of the fact that many upcoming movies have been announced to be in development, there have been no theatrical Star Wars movies since the debut of Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

ScreenRant is in attendance at Star Wars Celebration near Tokyo, Japan, where, during the panel promoting 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, it was confirmed that six long-awaited installments in the sci-fi franchise are still in development. Those тιтles, which were shared by Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni, are the upcoming Rey-centric movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the installments directed by Taika Waiтιтi and James Mangold, and the trilogy written by Simon Kinberg. These тιтles are in addition to previously confirmed movies like the Ryan Gosling feature Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy.

What This Means For Star Wars

The Movies Are Still Blazing Ahead

No new details have yet been shared about the six upcoming Star Wars movies, though it is possible that more updates will be shared as the event continues. While few announcements have been made about the movies since they were originally announced, the fact that they have been so proudly represented at Star Wars Celebration implies that there is significant internal confidence that development will continue apace and that the movies will indeed eventually make their way into theaters. Given this implication, it seems likely that the projects have not been substantially altered from when they were originally announced.

James Mangold’s movie was one of three upcoming Star Wars projects to be announced in early 2023.

Should that be the case, the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project will be a New Jedi Order movie centering on Rey (Daisy Ridley), one of the main characters of the franchise from Episode VII – The Force Awakens onward. While little is known about the upcoming Taika Waiтιтi movie or the Simon Kinberg trilogy, which was at one point rumored to be Episode X through Episode XII, the James Mangold movie is set to be the prequel Dawn of the Jedi.

Although the wide-ranging Star Wars franchise has been best known for its feature-length projects, in the past half a decade, it has been almost entirely relegated to the small screen in Disney+ series such as Ahsoka, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Book of Boba Fett. However, the fact that the Disney+ series The Mandalorian is making the transition to theaters and is still set to be followed by more than half a dozen other features means that a silver screen renaissance is in the works for the long-running franchise.
