The Marvel Cinematic Universe is setting up Avengers: Doomsday to be one of the most tragic installments in The Multiverse Saga, as one of the lead stars teases the Phase 6 film. The MCU is getting ready to bring an end to The Multiverse Saga, with only a handful of movies and TV shows left in Marvel Studios’ ongoing storyline. One film that’s going to begin the stage of changing the MCU forever is the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, which will be the first film featuring the Marvel team since Phase 3.
However, longtime MCU fans will need to get ready for some mᴀssive moments in Avengers: Doomsday. In a new interview with Collider, Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Captain America in the MCU, opened up about Avengers: Doomsday, which is officially in production. Similar to Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Doomsday is going to end on a cliffhanger, while Mackie teased the following:
You know what? I was really excited, man. It’s one of those stories that really pushes the boundaries, and it — the cliffhanger at the end, you know, the last moments of the film — it really builds and sets us up for a way for the continuation of the Marvel saga, which is really exciting. […] You see these characters, and you see how they’re introduced and how they play in the universe moving forward, and no one is safe. Everyone is expendable.
What Anthony Mackie’s Avengers: Doomsday Comments Mean
It’s not a surprise to hear Mackie confirm that Avengers: Doomsday ends on a cliffhanger, as it will likely conclude with some variation of the creation of Battleworld by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. In order for Victor von Doom’s actions to have some significant stakes, Avengers: Doomsday has to end with the super-villain, in one way or another, actually winning. It will also allow the MCU to have a twisted reality, which gives Marvel Studios a lot of freedom to give the audience a very different version of this franchise.
The idea of characters being killed off in Avengers: Doomsday will also help drive the emotional plot in Avengers: Secret Wars, especially if it ends up being long-time players who bite the dust. Having every single character somehow survive the events of Avengers: Doomsday will make Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom have less of an impact. That’s why Mackie’s comments about how everyone is expandable are terrifying, because this could mean that even some of the A-list actors are in danger as Marvel leads into the Avengers: Secret Wars story.

As nerve-wrecking as it is to hear that the MCU may be bidding farewell to some characters, Mackie’s comments also raise the anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday. Given how the Avengers: Doomsday cast also consists of X-Men movie characters from the Fox-Marvel era, it also puts some major fan-favorites at risk, too. But for now, the world will have to wait and see what will go down in Avengers: Doomsday.
