“Some Are, Well, Pretty Dumb:” Back To The Future’s Creators Have Probably Already Answered Your Biggest Questions About The Trilogy

The Back to the Future trilogy has had a lot of impact on the time travel genre, inspiring the way that other more recent movies handle time travel. Even forty years after the first film’s release, fans still debate about the minor details of Back to the Future, especially those having to do with things such as Back to the Future‘s paradoxes and alternate timelines. Back to the Future‘s time travel is explained in the films, but it seems to combine multiple different ideas about how time travel could work.

Even outside the science fiction of time travel, the Back to the Future trilogy has a lot of unanswered questions worth exploring. There’s a lot of interesting technology in Back to the Future Part II‘s 2015 that has created a lot of discussion as well. It’s also intriguing to think about all the thought that was put into these movies by those involved with the movies’ production and how they made decisions about Back to the Future that make the trilogy a classic.

Bob Gale & Robert Zemeckis’s Back To The Future Website Has A FAQ Page

The writers of Back to the Future, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, run an FAQ page on the Back to the Future website, where they answer many different types of fan questions. The FAQ page is broken down into sections, answering questions about each Back to the Future movie as well as general questions about the franchise. At the top of the page, they explain that “We get letters. And phone calls. And we meet fans. And a lot of ‘em have questions. Some of these questions are perceptive, some are naive, and some are, well, pretty dumb.”

Back to the Future‘s FAQ gives insight into the most popular types of questions that fans ask, covering a variety of topics that fans might be dying to know about. However, the FAQ of course cannot cover everything, so it’s also nice to know that the Back to the Future writers are open to and even used to receiving fan questions, even if they consider many of them “pretty dumb.” It’s amazing that so long after the trilogy’s release, there’s still so much about it to explore.

One of the coolest things about Back to the Future‘s FAQ is that the questions are answered directly by the writers. While there are parts of the filmmaking process that they might not have as much insight into as other members of the production, they are probably some of the best people to get answers from about many of the details of the trilogy’s story.

The FAQ makes it very clear that the writers have put a lot of thought into the details of the Back to the Future movies.

The FAQ makes it very clear that the writers have put a lot of thought into the details of the Back to the Future movies. Near the end of the FAQ, they provide a list of hidden things to catch on a Back to the Future rewatch, including minor details such as the Biff Tannen Museum having a sign that says “Smoking required” (via Back to the Future FAQ). The FAQ is worth checking out if you want to see Back to the Future discussed by people who know the story and its details better than anyone.

Some Back To The Future Mysteries Are Way More Interesting Than Others

The Most-Asked Question Might Not Be What You Expect

The Back to the Future FAQ page answers many different questions, but one of the first pieces of information it reveals in its Back to the Future Part II section is that the question the writers are most commonly asked is whether hoverboards really exist (to which the answer is no). This is partly because Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis once said jokingly in an interview that Back to the Future Part II‘s hoverboards exist in real life, and even some television network executives believed him.

While it is understandable that kids might write to the writers excitedly hoping to learn more about the possibility of getting their own hoverboards, the fact that adults believed Zemeckis’ comment makes the hoverboard question potentially one of the FAQ’s silliest. People deciding to have their burning question about the existence of hoverboards answered through a phone call or email to the writers of Back to the Future so frequently is an odd thing to have happen, but as the FAQ says, maybe it’s a sign that someone needs to invent them.

In addition to the hoverboard question, the FAQ answers inquiries such as where Marty’s hair dryer came from in the Darth Vader scene, or why his paternal great-great-grandmother looks so much like his mother. Many of the questions are about things that don’t get entirely explained, whether because their answers are obvious, the writers only thought about them later, or they weren’t necessary information for the characters to explain. The FAQ provides a better understanding of the trilogy and new things to look out for, so it’s a great resource for Back to the Future fans.
