A Minecraft Movie’s Technoblade Easter Egg Explained

One of A Minecraft Movie‘s more heartwarming Easter eggs was in reference to Technoblade, a legendary YouTuber and key figure in the Minecraft community. Of course, this and other deep cut references throughout the movie would be easy for casual players or audiences to miss—and that’s entirely okay. There was a little something for everyone in A Minecraft Movie, and, love it or hate it, it was certainly a wild and entertaining ride. Still, it’s worth understanding the Technoblade reference in the 2025 comedy movie, since it’s truly a heartwarming moment.

The community surrounding Minecraft goes far beyond the game itself. YouTube was a natural companion to the game since it first hit the World Wide Web in 2005, four short years before Minecraft was first released in 2009. It didn’t take long before avid players began posting content on the video-sharing site. Over time, Minecraft and YouTube became one another’s bread and ʙuттer. The best players in the world developed mᴀssive followings on YouTube, and that’s exactly how Technoblade entered the scene. Now, this YouTuber has been further immortalized by his Easter egg in A Minecraft Movie.

A Minecraft Movie’s Pig Wearing A Crown Is A Reference To YouTuber Technoblade

Technoblade Is A Legendary Minecraft Player & YouTuber

Jack Black singing as Steve in A Minecraft Movie

At one point in A Minecraft Movie, while Jack Black’s Steve showed his new companions around the Overworld, a pig wearing a bejeweled gold crown walked across their path. Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen) asked if the pig was some kind of king, and Steve responded, “That’s a legend.” A Minecraft Movie quickly moved on from the moment, but it’s meant to be evident to even those unfamiliar with Technoblade that this crowned pig represents something special.

Technoblade’s in-game avatar in Minecraft was a pig wearing a crown, and a similar image alsobecame his YouTube avatar. While Steve never mentioned the name Technoblade, the “legend” he spoke of was most certainly the famed YouTuber. Technoblade, whose real name was Alexander, first started his YouTube channel, which revolved primarily around Minecraft, in 2013, and gained prominence around 2019 when he began to dominate the compeтιтive scene. In the way of PVP, Technoblade was easily among the best of the best—an undeniable staple of the Minecraft community.

Technoblade initially tricked the public into thinking his name was “Dave.” He called this his greatest prank when he ultimately revealed that his actual name was Alexander in 2022.

Technoblade Pᴀssed Away Before A Minecraft Movie Began Filming

Technoblade Has A Powerful Legacy Within The Minecraft Community

Unfortunately, Technoblade pᴀssed away from metastatic sarcoma in 2022, several years before A Minecraft Movie began filming in 2024. The YouTuber announced his diagnosis with a video in August 2021. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy proved unsuccessful, and on June 30, 2022, a video тιтled “so long nerds” was posted to Technoblade’s YouTube channel announcing his death. The video included a final message from Technoblade (read by his father), in which he said, “If I had another 100 lives, I think I would choose to be Technoblade again every single time, as those were the happiest years of my life.

Technoblade had just under 11 million subscribers on YouTube at the time of his death, and this number only continued to grow. Currently, Technoblade’s channel has 19.2 million followers.

Understanding Technoblade’s contribution to the Minecraft community, as well as the joy he so clearly took in his job, allows A Minecraft Movie‘s tribute to the man to really land. The 2025 movie was mostly outrageous comedy. It was full of hilarious nods to the Minecraft video game and that unique brand of Jack Black and Jason Momoa ridiculousness. So, Steve calling the pig that so perfectly reflected Technoblade’s memorable avatar a “legend” was a surprisingly heartfelt addition. This YouTuber is already an unforgettable feature of the Minecraft community, but that smiling little pig in A Minecraft Movie further demonstrated his legacy.

A Minecraft Movie’s Technoblade Reference Was Inspired By A Cast Member

Director Jared Hess Has Shared Who Had The Idea To Pay Homage To Technoblade

A Minecraft Movie‘s director, Jared Hess, discussed in an interview some of his favorite Minecraft Easter eggs that made it into the film, and the Technoblade pig was at the very top of the list. Hess went on to explain that, while they were preparing to begin filming, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, who plays Henry in A Minecraft Movie, mentioned that they should find a way to honor Technoblade in the movie. Hess and the other creatives behind the project spoke to the design team and ultimately came up with A Minecraft Movie‘s version of Technoblade’s pig wearing a crown.

It’s ultimately fitting that Hansen got to be the one to call attention to Technoblade’s pig in A Minecraft Movie. While people have varying opinions of the 2025 video-game movie, the fact that one of the stars (fittingly, the youngest one) is so in tune with the Minecraft community is quite meaningful. The fact that he would suggest a Technoblade tribute demonstrates that Henson is a fan himself, and that’s precisely what you want in a project like this. Add in Hess’ recognition that the crowned pig was the best Easter egg of A Minecraft Movie, and it’s clear their hearts were in the right place.

A Minecraft Movie’s Technoblade Easter Egg Connects To The Video Games

Technoblade Lives On In The World Of Minecraft

Minecraft Technoblade launcher tribute

Technoblade’s impact on Minecraft is evident in the tribute in A Minecraft Movie, but this isn’t the first time something similar has been done within the franchise. Following the news that Technoblade had pᴀssed away, a Minecraft update revealed a new launch screen. In addition to typical features of the game, such as Steve, Creepers, and some generic animals, a little pig could be seen mounted on a stone block with a golden jeweled crown on its head. This was a tribute for Technoblade straight from the horse’s mouth. Looking at the design, it seems that A Minecraft Movie took inspiration from the Minecraft game in its method of tribute.

It’s yet another heartwarming way that the Minecraft franchise has ensured that Technoblade’s contribution to the game and community is never forgotten.

Minecraft‘s Technoblade-inspired launch screen was only temporary, but the game introduced another tribute to the YouTuber via its splash texts. When the Minecraft тιтle screen loads, a phrase is randomly selected from a preset list to “splash” across the logo. Now, one of these possibilities is the touching line “Technoblade never dies! It’s yet another heartwarming way that the Minecraft franchise has ensured that Technoblade’s contribution to the game and community is never forgotten. Between this and A Minecraft Movie‘s inclusion of the little Technoblade pig, we can tell that this splash text has it exactly right.
