Vin Diesel begs Universal to share the release date for the next Fast & Furious movie after teasing that a special project will arrive before Fast X: Part 2
. After helping to launch the franchise back in 2001, Diesel returned as Dom Toretto for 2023’s Fast X, the tenth main installment in the Fast Saga. The franchise is expected to wrap up the story with the announced Fast X: Part 2, but Diesel teased last month that Universal wants him to make a “precursor” to that film akin to Los Bandoleros, the short film precursor to Fast & Furious (2009).
Diesel now takes to Instagram to share a new picture of him and Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Letty in the franchise, asking Universal to reveal to audiences when they can expect the next Fast & Furious movie. The actor could be referring to Fast X: Part 2, which doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date, but he also includes a #LosBandoleros2 hashtag, hinting that he could be referring to this “precursor” project he teased previously. Los Bandoleros, which Diesel directed, chronicles Dom’s time in the Dominican Republic as he plans a fuel tanker heist. Rodriguez appears briefly as Letty, with the pair shown rekindling their romance.
What This Means For Fast X: Part 2
Diesel’s Los Bandoleros 2 Teases Explained
Though Fast X: Part 2 doesn’t have a specific release date on the calendar just yet, it is expected that the film will release at some point in 2026. Diesel has been vocal about this on social media, wanting the release of this potential franchise-ender to coincide with the franchise’s 25th anniversary. It doesn’t seem like filming has started on Part 2 yet, meaning the clock is ticking to make a 2026 release achievable.
With no clear timeline on Part 2, it’s possible that Los Bandoleros 2 is intended to tide fans over, in addition to setting up the story events to come after the Fast X ending. Diesel calling it Los Bandoleros 2 suggests it will be a short film, with the original being about 20 minutes long and included as part of Fast & Furious‘ Blu-ray release. If this precursor project is a short film, this raises questions about how it will be released to audiences, as shorts don’t get theatrical distribution.
Our Take On Vin Diesel’s Los Bandoleros 2 Teases
Why The Short Film Faces A Challenge
Los Bandoleros arguably isn’t an essential watch in order to understand the events of Fast & Furious, but it does help fill in some gaps in the story. A precursor to Fast X: Part 2 would seemingly serve the same role, but the Fast X ending raises questions about how exactly this would work. 2009’s Fast & Furious, after all, marked Dom’s first major role in the franchise since the original movie, but Fast X ends directly with a question about how he survives the dam explosion.
Los Bandoleros 2, then, is in a tricky spot. It seemingly can’t explain how Dom survives the dam explosion, because that’s essential information that should be included in the theatrically-released Part 2, not a short film that will be viewed by fewer people. As a short film, Los Bandoleros 2 needs to essentially be a bonus for fans, not an integral chapter of the story. It remains to be seen how Los Bandoleros 2 and Fast X: Part 2 come together, but Diesel is evidently hoping that some concrete information is revealed soon.
