Newly-minted Oscar winner Mikey Madison has reportedly pᴀssed on a role in the upcoming Star Wars movie from Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling. Few details about the project have been revealed so far, but Levy will direct while Gosling stars. It is expected the movie will be set years after The Rise of Skywalker and focus on new characters, though Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy hasn’t ruled out bringing back a few sequel trilogy characters. The unтιтled project is slated to be the next Star Wars movie to come after 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Per Variety, Madison was offered a role in the Star Wars movie, but she ultimately pᴀssed. It was said she was in conversation for the movie before pᴀssing. Details about the potential role have not been revealed, and it isn’t yet clear who else might be in conversation.
What This Means For Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie
A Minor Status Update On The Upcoming Movie
As with most Star Wars projects, every detail is being kept тιԍнтly under wraps. However, Madison’s brush with the galaxy far, far away gives a few clues about the status of Levy and Gosling’s film. Though numerous Star Wars movies have entered development since the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga in 2019, few have actually made it anywhere close to production; The Mandalorian & Grogu, with its confirmed release date, is the only one.
At this year’s Oscars, Madison won Best Leading Actress for her role in Sean Baker’s Anora.
That Levy’s project is now entering talks with potential cast members suggests it could be looking to begin production later this year, or at least that its script is in a decent place. Madison pᴀssing on the role frees up Levy and his casting team to consider other actors. That the Anora star was in talks for a part suggests the Star Wars movie will feature a new female character in her 20s; beyond that, fans can only imagine what kind of character Madison would’ve played. This also does not rule out her potentially joining the franchise elsewhere in the future.
Our Take On Madison Pᴀssing On Star Wars
Madison Is Likely Very Busy These Days
Coming off her acclaimed performances in movies such as Scream and Anora, there’s little question that Madison is in high demand right now, so it isn’t surprising that Levy would pursue her for a potential Star Wars role. Naysayers might believe Madison turned down the part for negative reasons, but it is more likely that she simply has other commitments. Though it would’ve been exciting to see her in a Star Wars movie, the franchise isn’t coming to a close anytime soon. Perhaps another role will prove to be better suited for her in the future.
