“It’s A Dangerous Game”: Florence Pugh Comments On The Meaning Of Thunderbolts*’s Asterisk

Thunderbolts*‘s mysterious asterisk gets addressed again by a star from the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. One of the Multiverse Saga’s issues is that the franchise has introduced a lot of heroes in the past few years, only not to have them interact. Thunderbolts*‘s star-studded cast comes as a direct answer to that problem, bringing together an ensemble of stars from all over the MCU’s movie and TV timeline. There are a few mysteries when it comes to Marvel’s next movie, but none of them are bigger than why the film added an asterisk to its тιтle.

Speaking with Fandango, Florence Pugh played coy about the meaning behind Thunderbolts*‘s asterisk.

The actress would not reveal the reason Marvel Studios added the asterisk to the film’s тιтle, claiming it was a dangerous game to talk about. Multiple Thunderbolts* actors have given different versions of that answer since Marvel made the intriguing move, but so far, it seems like the real meaning behind the asterisk will only be revealed when the MCU’s next 2025 movie arrives in theaters next month. Check out the full quote below:

“It’s a dangerous game and I don’t think any of us are allowed to speak.”

What Florence Pugh’s Thunderbolts* Asterisk Comments Mean

One Thing Sounds True About The Marvel Movie Mystery

While the Yelena Belova actress did her best not to reveal anything when it comes to Thunderbolts*‘s asterisk, the MCU star’s comments continue to point toward a big reveal. Marvel has set up some mysteries in the past, only to reveal that their answer was not as big as expected, with some jokes like Evan Peters’ character being Ralph Bohner in WandaVision and not Fox’s Quicksilver. However, most MCU mysteries turned out to have compelling answers, and based on how the Thunderbolts* cast is handling the asterisk question, the film’s case seems to be the latter.

With Pugh saying that it is a dangerous game to talk about the MCU movie’s asterisk and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige claiming the Thunderbolts* тιтle will be explained after its release, the groundwork is there for a major reveal. In the comics, the Thunderbolts were rebranded in a shocking fashion, becoming the Dark Avengers. Since Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is the new owner of the former Avengers Tower and the MCU movie’s trailers have mentioned Earth’s Mightiest Heroes many times, it is possible that the franchise will rebrand the team as the comics did, hence the asterisk.

Our Take On Florence Pugh’s Thunderbolts* Asterisk Comments

Yelena Belova with short hair in Thunderbolts*

I don’t expect any Thunderbolts* star to spoil the reason behind the movie’s asterisk, which is its biggest mystery, so close to the film’s release. Pugh’s comments are in line with what others have said in the past, and they help build even more excitement to finally find out the answer to that question when the movie arrives in theaters next month. I believe the Dark Avengers rebrand will turn out to be accurate, as the comic book connection and the film’s ties to Marvel’s premiere team seem to hint at that direction for Thunderbolts*.
