The Supergirl Movie’s Suit Reveal Confirms The Key Difference Between Milly Alcock & Sasha Calle’s Versions

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow suit has been revealed, and it confirms that there will be key differences between the DC Universe version of Kara Zor-El and the DCEU take on the character. After a long time absent from DC films, Kara finally returned in 2023’s The Flash. Instead of coming from the main timeline of the DCEU, the hero hailed from an alternate timeline created by Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen when he went back in time to save his mother.

Sasha Calle played the DCEU’s Supergirl. She looked different from how Kara does, with no blonde hair. The character served as a stand-in for Superman’s role in the Flashpoint storyline from the comics. While Calle was originally meant to continue as Supergirl for future DC movies, the change of leadership at the studio led to the DCEU being scrapped and a new actress getting to play a more classic version of Kara. House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock is now bringing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘s story to life on the film’s set, and her Supergirl suit has been revealed.

The DCU Supergirl Movie Suit Has A Key Difference From The DCEU’s

The Two Franchises Went In Different Directions For Supergirl’s Tone

While James Gunn and DC have yet to officially reveal a look at Alcock’s Supergirl in costume, the first peek at the new Supergirl suit has popped up online through new Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow set pH๏τos. Alcock’s version of the DC hero has a costume that looks very close to the one Kara sports in the comics that inspired her upcoming DCU movie. The design is classic, with Supergirl’s signature red skirt and boots. The DCU Supergirl also has the distinct gold belt she has in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics.

The visual is a major departure from the costume Calle’s Supergirl wore on The Flash. The DCEU went for another common Supergirl suit design in the sense that it gave her pants instead of her classic skirt. The texture and overall design of the suit were also similar to that of Henry Cavill’s Superman, more so than Supergirl’s comic book suits. The color design and short dark hair were seemingly inspired by Lara Lane-Kent from the Injustice universe. Now, Alcock and the DCU bring back the blonde Supergirl with her iconic red skirt.

Why Making The DCU Supergirl Suit Different From The DCEU Version Is The Right Move

DC’s Movie Universe Has Changed In A Huge Way

With the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as DC Studios’ co-CEOs came the end of the old DCEU. While there were good projects in the old franchise, a lot of its movies ended up being controversial. The Flash, which served as the only time Calle brought Supergirl to the big screen, was one of those. The movie ended up being a major box office bomb, losing the studio millions. As such, it is easy to understand why DC wanted to separate itself from most of what came before.

The DCU Supergirl suit is one of the ways in which the studio could make that divide clear. When looking at Calle and Alcock’s Supergirls, fans will be able to tell who the DCEU and DCU versions of Kara Zor-El are as soon as they bat their eyes on their costumes. DC made sure to create very different costumes, allowing the two iterations of Supergirl to feel completely separate, fitting the projects and cinematic franchises they come from. After the DCEU went for a darker overall tone, making Supergirl’s suit look more classic was the right move.

It also uses the comics as a reference, since Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on a limited series that presented a few tweaks to Kara’s suit, like its more distinct gold belt. With the red skirt and boots, Alcock’s Supergirl brings along a brighter tone that suits the nature of her cosmic adventure in the upcoming DCU movie. However, not everything will be light-hearted, as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a story that shows the hero’s conflicting feelings as she defines who she is. Having a classic suit while contemplating her role as a hero is fitting.

How Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Suits Compares To David Corenswet’s Superman Costume

The Super Cousins Have Some Similarities

Now that both the DCU Superman and Supergirl suits are out there, it is easy to see how the franchise has a similar idea for how the characters should look and feel. Instead of the darker tone they had in the DCEU, both heroes wear their classic costumes in the DCU, with vibrant colors and the red trunks for David Corenswet’s Superman, while Alcock’s Supergirl has her red skirt. Additionally, Supergirl has the same Kingdom Come-inspired “S” crest on her suit that Corenswet’s Superman has. Despite the brighter tone, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow should put Kara on a challenging journey.
