The Marvels has now received a new life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the announcement of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast made the movie crucial to the Multiverse Saga. Brie Larson’s first solo film as Captain Marvel was one of the franchise’s biggest hits, with 2019’s Captain Marvel ending its theatrical run with $1.13 billion (via Box Office Mojo). Due to the film’s success, it was expected that a sequel would also perform well, especially since The Marvels‘ cast added Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau.
I expected the film to be a moderate success. I knew that Captain Marvel saw a considerable boost in interest due to its placement between the final two Avengers movies of the Infinity Saga. While I expected the sequel would not see the same performance due to its different circumstances, I was still shocked that The Marvels became the lowest-grossing entry among all MCU movies with only $206.1 worldwide. While I understand some of the criticism, I believe The Marvels is better than its box office suggests, which is why its importance for the MCU’s upcoming movies is exciting.
The Marvels Is Key To Avengers: Doomsday After Its Cast Announcement
The Next Avengers Movie Is Directly Connected To The Captain Marvel Sequel
The Marvels has now become the most important movie in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga so far, all due to Avengers: Doomsday’s cast announcement. While some other films in the franchise have touched on the multiverse, none appear to have as big of an impact on the next Avengers movie as The Marvels. The reason for that is how The Marvels‘ post-credits scene opened the door for several stars from Fox’s X-Men franchise to come back as their characters in the MCU. The film saw the return of Kelsey Grammer as Beast.

In his The Marvels appearance, Beast came from a universe where the X-Men were established and even mentioned Professor X. With Monica Rambeau in that universe, it was obvious that Marvel Studios had big plans for that plot point. Those plans were made clear when multiple stars from Fox’s original X-Men movies, including Grammer as Beast and others like Cyclops actor James Marsden and Charles Xavier star Patrick Stewart, were announced for Avengers: Doomsday. The X-Men universe from The Marvels will return in Avengers: Doomsday, and Monica’s appearance there could lead to an incursion between Earth-616 and the X-Men’s reality.
The Marvels Presented The Multiverse Saga Team-Up Fans Have Been Asking For
The MCU Has Not Had Many Hero Interactions In The Multiverse Saga
One of the reasons why I’m excited about The Marvels‘ newfound importance to the Multiverse Saga is that now more fans can watch the movie for the first time and realize how it has done something that they have been asking for. The most exciting factor of the MCU has always been its hero interactions. It was with 2012’s The Avengers that Marvel really stole the show and turned the MCU into appointment viewing for millions. Since then, we have had several hero team-ups that range from expected to some that fans never thought they would see.
While the MCU’s Multiverse Saga has introduced several new characters in the past few years, many of its heroes have yet to interact. The Marvels comes as an answer to that problem. Monica Rambeau debuted in WandaVision, while Kamala Khan first appeared leading Disney+’s Ms. Marvel. The Marvels not only saw them team up, but also put them together with Captain Marvel, an MCU veteran who represented very different things for each hero, and Nick Fury, the long-time franchise star who created the Avengers. Fans have been asking for more team-ups in the Multiverse Saga, and The Marvels did it.
I Hope Avengers: Doomsday Can Allow The Captain Marvel Franchise To Return
The Franchise Is Currently In A Difficult Situation
As I enjoyed The Marvels, I would love to see a sequel that allows us to get more of the film’s lead trio going on cosmic adventures. However, the nature of the business is that, since The Marvels became the MCU’s lowest-grossing movie, it is hard to believe that Marvel would decide to work on a sequel. However, that is where Avengers: Doomsday could come in to save the day. The movie will use The Marvels‘ setup for the return of many beloved stars from Fox’s X-Men franchise.
If that setup works and The Marvels characters show up in the film and play an active role in the story, I could see a sequel to the film happening even though The Marvels was a major box office bomb. After all, the franchise’s potential was shown when Captain Marvel grossed over $1 billion. It would be a repeated case of the MCU’s Avengers movies boosting interest in the Captain Marvel franchise, which I think could be enough to warrant another film despite The Marvels‘ box office failure.
