A Minecraft Movie Officially Gives Jack Black 2 All-Time Box Office Records

A Minecraft Movie has made it past milestone after milestone at the box office. Despite the A Minecraft Movie trailer being viciously mocked after its release, audiences flooded to theaters to watch the video game adaptation. It opened to $162.7 million domestically and is continuing to be a huge success both in North America and overseas. The film has also spurred multiple viral theater trends, seeing some viewers throwing popcorn, cheering, and even getting on their friends’ shoulders in reaction to key scenes.

Video game adaptations have been particularly impactful for Jack Black. The actor has now made more than $5 billion at the box office among all the movies in which he has played a lead, an impressive career milestone that was boosted by A Minecraft Movie‘s opening weekend. Not everyone has loved Black’s performance as Steve, such as ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki, who noted in her review of A Minecraft Movie that Black’s usually funny persona did not work in the film. Still, the movie’s success lives on, and it has now made Black a part of two all-time box office records.

A Minecraft Movie Is Now The No. 2 Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie Of All Time

It Gives Black An Even More Impressive Record

A Minecraft Movie has ascended the charts to become the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. While video games have been adapted into TV shows and movies for the past few decades, recent years have seen a significant uptick in such adaptations. Currently, The Last of Us season 2 is running weekly on Max while A Minecraft Movie stays in theaters. 2025 will also see the release of Mortal Kombat 2 and Until Dawn, both of which are video game adaptations as well.

Per The Numbers, A Minecraft Movie has continued to impress as it earned Black two notable all-time career records. A Minecraft Movie is now the no. 2 highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, and the no.1 highest-grossing live-action video game adaptation of all time. The highest-grossing animated video game adaptation is 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, wherein Jack Black plays the voice of Bowser. This means that Black stars in both the highest-grossing live-action and animated video game adaptations to date.

What This Means For A Minecraft Movie

Could It Become The Highest-Grossing Video Game Adaptation Ever?

The Super Mario Bros. movie made over $1.3 billion during its run, making its total hard to beat. A Minecraft Movie‘s strong start, however, makes it possible that the movie could become the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever. A Minecraft Movie did see a sharper second-weekend drop (-50.5%) than The Super Mario Bros. Movie (-36.9%), but it started at a higher total because of its record-breaking debut. The 2025 adaptation also has Easter weekend coming up, which could increase ticket sales. Even if it doesn’t break the all-time record, A Minecraft Movie still boasts impressive records for Black.
