Jack Black Surprises Minecraft Movie Screening In Video Responding To Viral Theater Messes

A Minecraft Movie

star Jack Black surprises the audience at one screening, commenting on the viral movie theater messes. Based on the Mojang Studios video game franchise, the hit adaptation features Black starring as Steve, an expert crafter who joins forces with four misfits for an epic quest to save the Overworld from a dangerous threat. Hailing from director Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie has been a mᴀssive hit so far, with the movie’s chicken jockey scene becoming a viral sensation due to videos of theater-goers throwing their popcorn and screaming after the words are uttered in the movie.

A new video shared by Bobby Hundreds on Instagram features Black speaking to the audience of a screening of A Minecraft Movie over a PA system, disguising his voice as he requests that “popped corn” not be thrown during the film. Black then enters the theater and reveals his idenтιтy to the crowd, causing an uproar from the younger movie-goers in attendance when he says “chicken jockey!” Black then prances around the theater with his character’s Minecraft axe, high-fiving those in attendance. What This Means For A Minecraft Movie

The Chicken Jockey Trend Explained (& Why It’s Controversial)

A Minecraft Movie reviews have been mixed from critics, but the response from audiences has been far more positive, especially from younger demographics. Though, in this age of uncertainty for the theatrical experience, the film’s success is a welcome reprieve for movie theaters, the film has become divisive because of the “chicken jockey” viral trend. This trend is eventizing the film for young movie-goers and has undoubtedly contributed to A Minecraft Movie‘s stellar $550 million (and counting) box office haul, but it’s also resulting in mᴀssive messes for theater employees to clean after every screening.

This comes as complaints about poor movie theater etiquette are on the rise, with more viewers seemingly talking and using their phones during screenings. Theaters, however, aren’t making any organized changes to deal with this as theater attendance is already down compared to previous years. Black’s request for viewers to refrain from throwing popcorn follows comments from Hess, who, in an interview with EW, called A Minecraft Movie‘s chicken jockey trend “hilarious” while downplaying the seriousness of viewers throwing popcorn and cheering.

Our Take On Jack Black’s A Minecraft Movie Screening Appearance

Has The Chicken Jockey Trend Gone Too Far?

Though Black is clearing hyping the crowd up, it is notable that he kindly asks viewers not to throw food. The eventization of a major Hollywood film is crucial to achieving box office success these days, but this eventization can go too far. While many younger viewers participating in the chicken jockey trend are having fun, it’s likely that not everyone in each screening is eager to have popcorn thrown on them. It also goes without saying that live chickens should not be involved in this trend, as one viral video featured.

At the same time, after a series of underperforming films in the first quarter of 2025, it’s great to see A Minecraft Movie succeed and connect with viewers in such a big way. Younger viewers, especially, don’t have the same connection with movie theaters that some older audiences may have, and exposing them to the joys of that experience is definitely a good thing. While A Minecraft Movie‘s chicken jockey trend is sure to remain divisive, it certainly seems like Black would like less food to be thrown.
