Weapons Images Reveal Cryptic First Look At Barbarian Director’s Next Horror Movie

Weapons images reveal a cryptic first look at Zach Cregger’s next horror movie. The comedian and actor burst onto the scene in 2022 when he wrote and directed Barbarian, which received rave reviews from critics for its effective use of horror tropes and unexpected twists, and was also a big box-office success that made over $45 million against its small $4 million budget. Cregger’s follow-up will be Weapons, which sparked an intense bidding among several studios and saw a big bump in budget to $38 million.

Now, the first look at Cregger’s next horror film has been revealed. On X, formerly Twitter, New Cine Cinema shared five first-look images from Weapons. The images show several cryptic scenes from the film, including a digital clock that reads 2:17, a little league baseball team, and a child running across a street at night. On X, each image was captioned, “And they never came back…” Check out the five images in the slideshow below:

Though the images seem completely cryptic, they do contain some information pertaining to the plot. The digital clock reads 2:17 a.m. which, as revealed by the Weapons footage screened at CinemaCon 2025, is the time when 17 children in the small town of Maybrook wake up, get out of bed, walk downstairs, go out into the dark, and never come back. Another image shows one of those children running across the street at night. Though they are not shown in the first images, the film’s cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, and Austin Abrams.

In addition to the five first-look images, an in-universe website for Weapons was also launched, called Maybrook News (located at www.maybrookmissing.com), which contains a news story covering the disappearance of the 17 children in the fictional Florida town. The website also features a news story тιтled “Underground Prison Discovered in Rental Home,” referring to the plot of Barbarian, suggesting that Cregger’s two horror movies may be set in the same universe. Weapons has been described as an epic mosaic of interrelated stories, some related to police corruption, generational trauma, witchcraft, blood rituals, and religious abuse.

The cryptic nature of the first-look images from Weapons teases the eerie and unpredictable atmosphere that Zach Cregger is crafting, similar to his first horror film, Barbarian. At CinemaCon, New Line Cinema chief Richard Brener described the film as “intriguing and unpredictable, with a nice helping of batsнιт insane,” with the writer-director also calling it “a movie that unravels and reinvents itself as it goes.” With haunting visuals and an ominous tagline, the Weapons images offer just enough to intrigue audiences without revealing too much.

Weapons releases in theaters on August 8.
