A Minecraft Movie has blasted past a major box office milestone. The project, which is inspired by the тιтular sandbox game, follows a mismatched group of people accidentally traveling to a mysterious land known as the Overworld, where they are guided by longtime resident Steve (Jack Black). The cast also includes Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. The Minecraft Movie release kicked off with an opening weekend of $162.7 million, which is not only the best domestic debut of the year, but the best ever for a movie adapted from a video game.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, A Minecraft Movie is projected to hit a worldwide total of $550 million by the end of its second weekend in theaters. This makes it the first Hollywood movie to pᴀss the $500 million milestone worldwide in 2025 as it blasts past the $413.4 million earned by the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Captain America: Brave New World. The only movie that has grossed more worldwide at the time of writing is the Chinese smash hit Ne Zha 2, which has earned $1.898 billion, making it the highest-grossing animated movie of all time.

It Is Already A Smash Hit
A Minecraft Movie has now set a standard that may be difficult to surpᴀss. As the video game adaptation races up the chart on the way to a global total that could exceed $1 billion, it follows in the footsteps of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.36 billion and was the second highest-grossing movie of the year behind Barbie. There are not many upcoming 2025 movies that even have a chance of outgrossing it, though it could eventually be surpᴀssed by impending blockbusters such as Superman, How to Train Your Dragon, or Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Barbie was a smash hit, grossing $1.447 billion worldwide, as partially spurred on by the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon of double features being inspired by it opening on the same weekend as future Best Picture winner Oppenheimer.
Even if it is surpᴀssed as the highest-grossing Hollywood movie of 2025, this global total is still an outstanding result after just two weekends. While the huge budget of A Minecraft Movie is reportedly $150 million and could have posed a major hurdle, its break-even point was most likely somewhere around $375 million. At the rate it is going, it could very well hit double that total by its third weekend in theaters.

It Could Be The First Of Many 2025 Success Stories
The mᴀssive worldwide success of A Minecraft Movie has come at exactly the right time for the 2025 box office. Even though the year started off well with solid mid-level successes adding up to overall weekends that were showing growth upon recent years, a period of doldrums set in starting around late February that has seen a string of underperforming blockbusters such as Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White fail to prop up the marketplace as expected. However, the video game movie has set a new standard that will hopefully carry on as the year continues.
