New Blumhouse Horror Movie’s 5th Place Box Office Opening Isn’t As Bleak As It Looks

Despite a shaky opening, Blumhouse’s Drop is in a good position to succeed. The horror movie, which was a collaboration between Universal and Blumhouse, stars The White Lotus Meghann Fahy as the seemingly innocuous Violet. After receiving a tense phone call on a first date, however, Violet must kill her date to save the lives of her son and sister. Drop is currently in theaters and was released on April 11 in 47 territories.

According to a report by Variety, Drop experienced a less-than-stellar opening, as it debuted in fifth place at the box office. With its $10 million global take, it sits behind A Minecraft Movie, The King of Kings, The Amateur, and A24’s Warfare. Ordinarily, a fifth place finish would be worrying, but a $10 million take is actually a surprisingly good sign for this relatively low-budget horror movie. It has already nearly earned its $11 million budget in its opening weekend alone.

What Drop’s Box Office Take Means For Blumhouse

Blumhouse Has Struggled This Year

Unfortunately, it has been a difficult year so far for Blumhouse, given the disappointment of its other two major 2025 releases. Wolf Man, which had a $25 million budget, disappointed critics and audiences alike, earning just around $35 million at the box office. While it earned back its budget, it was not enough to profit when considering the marketing costs and the cuts that theaters take from every ticket. The Woman in the Yard also disappointed with a $19.6 million box office take against a $12 million budget.

If Drop can continue its run until it reaches profitability, it should be enough to make Blumhouse more comfortable.

If Drop achieves profitability, it could be a good sign for Blumhouse as it looks to turn the year around. Its upcoming slate includes M3GAN 2.0 on June 27, The Black Phone 2 on October 17, and Five Nights at Freddy’s on December 5, and each of those movies should be an easy success. If Drop can continue its run until it reaches profitability, it should be enough to make Blumhouse more comfortable, regarding the rest of the year, after its early disappointments.

This Month Has Been Excellent For The Box Office

Blumhouse is not the only studio that has been struggling this year, but A Minecraft Movie‘s record-breaking debut appears to have compelled audiences to return to theaters. April has been a mᴀssive boon for the box office after an extremely slow quarter, and Drop‘s early success is further proof that viewers are still interested in smaller-scale theatrical debuts. Without an enormous budget hindering the production, the movie should easily find its way to success. Even with a fifth place start, Blumhouse should be celebrating this opening weekend.
