Now, Lionsgate has revealed the trailer for A Breed Apart. Fifteen years after some fateful events, a group of influencers arrives on a remote island that they look to livestream and otherwise document on social media. The trailer then introduces the compeтιтion element, wherein the influencers will be competing to rescue the most free-roaming dogs. Despite the prize being winning the entire island, the influencers are not thrilled about venturing into the island’s jungle. Attempting to persuade them, their host attempts to show them how safe the dogs are, and ends up brutally mauled, causing chaos to ensue.
What This Means For A Breed Apart
The Movie Was Inspired By The 2006 Film The Breed
The trailer markets the movie as inspired by the cult film The Breed. That 2006 film followed a group of college students who visit a seemingly deserted island and end up face-to-face with battle-trained dogs. Like A Breed Apart, The Breed was a comedy horror film with intensely violent elements. It was executive-produced by horror icon Wes Craven, the icon behind the Scream franchise. While its plot carries a lot of similarities to its predecessor, A Breed Apart puts a unique 2020s spin on the story, making the main characters influencers.
2025’s A Breed Apart appears to have no relation to the 1984 Philippe Mora film of the same name.
This leads to some highlights in the trailer, such as when one character is still filming as host Vince gets killed by dogs. The trailer also baits the audience by giving them greater access to the backstory than the characters have. Vince says, at one point, that a previous Hollywood film stopped production on the island due to the disappearance of the set’s animal handlers. In a flashback, this disappearance actually meant death, making ᴀssumptions about the characters’ unfortunate fates.
Our Take On The A Breed Apart Trailer
A Breed Apart Looks Enjoyable
While the trailer is not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny, A Breed Apart does try to find dark humor in its horror situations. Based on this snippet alone, I would liken the creature-based horror to something like Cocaine Bear, wherein over-the-top kills and gore create comedy due to their extreme nature. This genre-blending could make A Breed Apart appealing to audiences as it arrives in theaters, on demand and digital platforms on May 16.
