The fourth Psych movie has gotten a disappointing update. The original show, which followed Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) pretending to be a police psychic with the help of his friend Gus (Dulé Hill), ran on USA Network for eight seasons between 2006 and 2014. It was followed by a trilogy of sequel movies, with the first debuting on USA Network in 2017 and the next two arriving on Peacock in 2020 and 2021. While it has been reported that the script for the possible Psych 4 is complete, no further progress has been made in quite some time.
On the latest installment of the TVLine feature “Matt’s Inside Line,” in order to answer a reader-submitted question, journalist Matt Webb Mitovich reached out to James Roday Rodriguez – who co-wrote all three previous movies in addition to starring in them – to inquire about the status of Psych 4. While Rodriguez said that “our creative team is ready,” he implied that the holdup is on Peacock’s end, telling fans to “direct their energy towards the Cock.” Read his full quote below:
Our creative team is ready and have been ready but, unfortunately, it takes two to tango. If the fans really want to make some noise, they should direct their energy towards the Cock.
What This Means For Psych
Could The New Movie Happen?
As Rodriguez says, it does seem that the decision to make the fourth movie is in Peacock’s hands. Considering the fact that he is attached to the project as a screenwriter, it makes sense that he would still desire to be involved in the movie. In addition to the creative team being prepared to develop the project, it also seems likely that the core Psych cast would also be willing to return, even so many years later, given the fact that many of them have already appeared in every installment of the sequel trilogy.
It is always possible that Peacock could pick up the project, as many of their original shows and movies are based on well-known IP, including Bel-Air, The Continental: From the World of John Wick, Twisted Metal, and Ted. However, just as many have been cancelled by the streamer, such as Saved by the Bell, Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem, Queer as Folk, Punky Brewster, Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, and Vampire Academy. While the Psych movie franchise has not technically been cancelled, per se, it could have fallen by the wayside in a similar way.
Our Take On The Psych 4 Update
It Does Not Offer Much Hope
Given the fact that it has been three years since a Psych movie has come to Peacock, it ultimately seems unlikely that the fourth movie will end up going into production unless something major brings the property back into the conversation. This is always possible, as revealed by the fact that the USA Network legal drama Suits became a mᴀssive streaming hit in 2023, four years after going off the air, which led to the show getting a new spinoff, Suits LA.
