A Minecraft Movie Lands On Major All-Time Box Office Chart After Less Than One Week In Theaters

A Minecraft Movie has just hit a major box office chart. The new movie, which follows a mismatched group of people (Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen) accidentally traveling through a portal into Overworld, the land from the popular video game Minecraft, where they are guided by longtime resident Steve (Jack Black). The movie was directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) from a screenplay by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta.

The budget of A Minecraft Movie is enormous, reportedly hitting a total of $150 million without factoring in marketing costs. This means that the movie most likely needs to earn $375 million in theaters in order to break even. Potential hurdles that presented themselves ahead of the movie’s release were the fact that it got middling-to-negative reviews that earned it a 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes and that some other big-budget video game movies have failed to entice audiences to theaters in recent years, including 2024’s Borderlands, which only grossed $33 million against its roughly $120 million budget.

A Minecraft Movie Is One Of The Highest-Grossing Video Game Movies Of All Time

It Has Been In Theaters For Less Than A Week

Now, the Jared Hess movie has now arrived on a new box office playing field. The Minecraft Movie release already exploded past expectations before it even began, breaking the record for the most ticket pre-sales for a PG-rated movie in 2025 so far. It compounded this by debuting with a domestic opening weekend gross of $162.7 million, which is not only the best of the year so far, but the best for any video game movie in history, surpᴀssing the record held by 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.4 million).

The second-best domestic debut of the year so far belongs to Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8 million).

Per The Numbers, as of the end of Tuesday, April 8, A Minecraft Movie has earned a cumulative gross of $323.38 million at the worldwide box office. This is enough for it to have surpᴀssed 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ($314.1 million) as the tenth highest-grossing video game movie of all time after less than a week in theaters. It has also recently surpᴀssed the totals of the video game movies Battleship ($313.5 million) and Sonic the Hedgehog ($302.5 million).

What This Means For A Minecraft Movie

It Will Probably Keep Climbing

Jack Black's Steve runs screaming from an explosion in A Minecraft Movie 2025

At the time of writing, the nine video game movies on the chart above A Minecraft Movie range from 2010’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time ($336.4 million) at No. 9 to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.359 billion) at No. 1. Given the fact that it is only $13 million below Prince of Persia, it is on course to quickly surpᴀss it. If it keeps up its momentum, it may only be a matter of time before it hits No. 1, especially considering the fact that its opening weekend beat out Super Mario.
