Cannes Film Festival 2025 Lineup: Official Selection Revealed

The Cannes Film Festival

has revealed the official selection for the 2025 edition. The French event, a major spot on the annual cinematic calendar, will reconvene for its 78th festival from Tuesday, May 13 to Saturday, May 24. Despite rumors swirling, very few films were confirmed for the festival ahead of time, when typically a few prominent тιтles are revealed early. Only Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was announced as a Cannes premiere earlier this week.

Now, a press conference has revealed the official lineup of Cannes 2025 – or, at least, most of it. After an introduction from Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, the initial list of selections was shared by Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate. He did, however, end his presentation by saying more тιтles will be announced ahead of the festival’s start date, noting that the selection committee reviewed a record 2,909 feature submissions. The announcement itself can be replayed below:

The official Compeтιтion selections include many movies previously tipped for the festival, including Ari Aster’s Eddington, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, and Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, which dramatizes the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless and always seemed destined to premiere at the French festival. Julia Ducournau, whose 2021 horror film тιтane made her the second woman ever to win the Palme D’Or, returns with Alpha, while acclaimed American filmmaker Kelly Reichardt will debut The Mastermind after breaking into the compeтιтion lineup with her 2022 film Showing Up.

Frémaux confirmed that Tom Cruise will appear in Cannes alongside Christopher McQuarrie to present their newest Mission: Impossible film to the world, and he certainly won’t be the only star to attend. The casts of The Phoenician Scheme and Eddington alone would be enough to crowd the red carpet, but actors Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson are also both confirmed to be making their directorial debuts, with Eleanor the Great and Urchin, respectively. Those movies will compete in the festival’s Un Certain Regard section.
