The Thomas Crown Affair: Cast, Story & Everything We Know About Michael B. Jordan’s Remake

The classic heist film The Thomas Crown Affair is getting another remake, but this time Michael B. Jordan will be at the helm. The first film was released in 1968 and concerns a bored multi-millionaire who crafts the perfect crime to satisfy his need for excitement. While executing the heist, he runs across the investigator hired to catch the culprits, and they begin a torrid love affair full of twists and shocking turns. The original film scored two Oscar nominations and inspired a 1999 remake starring Pierce Brosnan in the тιтle role.

Like many of the best heist films, The Thomas Crown Affair is an archetypal story that is perfect for refreshing every generation. Just as the 1999 film updated the more antiquated aspects of the ’68 classic, Michael B. Jordan’s new vision will bring Thomas Crown into the 21st century. With the тιтle role requiring star power in abundance, Jordan is set to join the likes of Brosnan and Steve McQueen (the star of the 1968 version), and combine charm and wit in the same package. Though details are scant, the remake is already shaping up to be a hit.

A Second Remake Is On The Way

As is fitting for such a large project, The Thomas Crown Affair is aiming for a worldwide theatrical release.

Coming 25 years after the first remake, it has now been confirmed that a new remake of The Thomas Crown Affair is in the works. Though much is still unknown about the heist film project, Creed star Michael B. Jordan is attached as the movie’s lead, and he will also be ᴀssuming the directing duties. Jordan is no stranger to pulling double duty, and he recently directed the hit threequel, Creed III in 2023.

The script was written by Drew Pearce, who ᴀssumed the duty from Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson who had previously taken pᴀsses at the story. Jordan is one of the movie’s co-producers alongside the likes of Elizabeth Raposo, Patrick McCormick, Marc Toberoff, and original 1968 screenwriter Alan Trustman. As is fitting for such a large project, The Thomas Crown Affair is aiming for a worldwide theatrical release. Filming is set to begin in summer 2025, though a release window remains elusive for now. However, it’s likely that the film could arrive as early as 2026.

Michael B. Jordan Steals The тιтle Role

With so much of the new remake being kept under wraps, only a few names are currently attached to the cast of The Thomas Crown Affair. Michael B. Jordan’s movies have proven to be big hits, and the Creed star is hoping to continue his H๏τ streak by playing the wealthy thrill-seeker, Thomas Crown. It’s unknown if the remake will make any changes to Crown’s character, though Jordan will undoubtedly put his own spin on the part. He’s also no stranger to pulling double-duty as director and star.

The next most important role is that of the independent investigator who tracks down Crown and begins a cat-and-mouse love affair with him. The character was played by Faye Dunaway in the original and Rene Russo in the remake, and Jordan has cast Bones and All star Taylor Russell in the part. Much like Jordan’s Thomas Crown, it’s unclear how Russell’s version of the character will be different, but some changes are needed to further modernize the remake.

Hollywood is nothing if not consistent, and The Thomas Crown Affair has been remade like clockwork for each successive generation. The original 1968 film (directed by the legendary Norman Jewison) was a masterclass of late-’60s progressive filmmaking, and it even scored an Oscar for Best Original Song. Tinseltown came calling three decades later with the release of the 1999 movie by John McTiernan, and it proved to be a box-office smash that grossed nearly $125 million (via Box Office Mojo). This makes Jordan’s upcoming remake a no-brainer, especially with 25 years pᴀssing between attempts.

1968’s The Thomas Crown Affair won the Best Original Song Oscar for “The Windmills of Your Mind” by Michel Legrand.

The Thomas Crown Affair Remake Story

A Daring Heist & A Steamy Romance

Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway stand together on a boat in The Thomas Crown Affair

The Thomas Crown Affair brilliantly balances an exciting heist story with a steamy romance for a unique result in the overdone genre. Therefore, the remake is expected to have both in abundance, especially with Michael B. Jordan as the star. Though the new movie’s specifics are unknown, the basic framework of the first two versions follows a bored multi-millionaire (or billionaire in the 1999 film’s case) who decides to orchestrate the perfect bank heist in order to satisfy his lust for adrenaline. However, a deft investigator is hired to recoup the bank’s losses, and she is quickly on Crown’s tail.

Things take an interesting turn when the wealthy and dashing Crown manages to seduce the young investigator, but she has plans of her own and will stop at nothing to get her commission and maybe a bit more too. This kicks off a twisting story of romance and intrigue as the two try to outwit each other with millions of dollars on the line. The new remake of The Thomas Crown Affair will likely add some modern wrinkles to the equation, but must maintain the core storyline in order to be as appealing as its predecessors.
