28 Years Later Image Sees Aaron Taylor-Johnson On The Hunt In Danny Boyle’s Post-Apocalyptic Movie

28 Years Later

gets a new image, showing Aaron Taylor-Johnson wielding a bow and arrow. Serving as the third film in the franchise after 28 Days Later (2002), the upcoming film hails from original movie director Danny Boyle, with a script from original movie screenwriter Alex Garland. The 28 Years Later cast doesn’t include Cillian Murphy back as Jim, though he is on board as an executive producer, with Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Alfie Williams instead starring.

Collider now shares a new image from 28 Years Later, showing Taylor-Johnson and Williams, as Jamie and his son, Spike, respectively, skirting around a rundown building in the underbrush. Both actors are holding bows and arrows in the image, and it appears as if they’re either hunting or potentially being hunted themselves. Check out the new image below:

Collider also shares a longer official synopsis for the movie, teasing how Jamie and Spike fit into the story:

“It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”

What This Means For 28 Years Later

Will Cillian Murphy Appear?

Though Murphy’s Jim may have served as the protagonist in the franchise-starting first movie over two decades ago, it’s Jamie and Spike who will be among 28 Years Later‘s key characters. Those hoping to see Jim again aren’t out of luck, however. The upcoming installment is the first entry in a planned trilogy, with the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, having already been filmed by director Nia DaCosta. Whether the third movie happens depends on how well the first two perform, but Murphy will seemingly be back on-screen in one or both of these sequels.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is slated to release on January 16, 2026, about seven months after the upcoming installment.

As for the new image, though, it makes clear that a lot has changed in the almost three decades since the outbreak of the Rage Virus. Guns are seemingly out of reach for the average survivor in the U.K., and the inclusion of bow and arrows could make for an interesting change from the first two movies. As the 28 Years Later trailer teased, though, there are still organized military forces at work that have access to more advanced weaponry.

Our Take On The 28 Years Later Image

Taylor-Johnson Could Make For A Compelling New Franchise Lead

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams in 28 Years Later

Taylor-Johnson has had a buzzy few years, due in large part to being, for a long time, the reported frontrunner in the search for the new James Bond. It now seems as if those reports weren’t accurate and that relatively little progress was made behind-the-scenes on a new 007 movie, but Taylor-Johnson has definitely become a more recognizable figure as a result. This could benefit 28 Years Later, and thus make the third installment in the franchise more likely to come to fruition.

Though The Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ has certainly explored this to a certain extent, 28 Years Later has an interesting opportunity to show how society changes close to three decades after an apocalyptic outbreak. The return to more primitive technology and a more primitive way of life could make this a truly unique experience in the zombie sub-genre, especially given Boyle’s distinct directing style. Many questions remain about 28 Years Later, but the latest image is sure to only increase anticipation for the film.
