Fox’s X-Men Universe Totally Wasted 1 Great Mutant Team, And I Hope Marvel Can Redeem Them In Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios has the perfect opportunity to redeem one of 20th Century Fox’s most wasted mutant superhero teams following the cast announcement for 2026’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel confirmed the first 27 actors confirmed to be returning in Avengers: Doomsday at the end of March, and this included several members of Fox’s original X-Men team. While it will be great to see these characters back in action, there are many other neglected heroes from Fox’s X-Men franchise that also deserve to get redemption in the MCU.

Joining members of the Avengers, the Thunderbolts and the Fantastic Four in Avengers: Doomsday will be Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming from Fox’s original X-Men trilogy, as well as Channing Tatum from ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. There are, however, many other actors that haven’t yet been confirmed, including the likes of Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman and more. Some of Fox’s smaller X-Men franchise stars would also be great to see again, including those from a seriously wasted superhero team.

I Want Marvel To Bring Back Fox’s New Mutants In Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Could Bring Back The New Mutants In The MCU’s Phase 6

The prospect of Fox’s classic X-Men team returning, perhaps joining forces with Magneto and Mystique to fight Doctor Doom, is hugely exciting, but we want to see even more mutants from Earth-10005 in Avengers: Doomsday. This includes the members of the New Mutants team, who made their live-action debut in 2020’s eponymous The New Mutants, the final installment in Fox’s X-Men franchise, which was rushed to completion and released after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. These mutant characters from Marvel Comics deserve live-action redemption more than most.

Illyana Rasputin’s Magik

Anya Taylor-Joy

Danielle “Dani” Moonstar’s Mirage

The New Mutants came together to take on the Smiley Men and the Demon Bear in a hospital run by the EsSєx Corporation. Comprising Sunspot, Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball and Mirage, the New Mutants team had the potential to be dark, grounded and gritty, an exciting installment to Fox’s X-Men franchise, but this was not the case. Fox and the upheaval surrounding Disney’s buyout meant this team was completely wasted in The New Mutants, so it would be fantastic to see them brought back alongside more established X-Men members in Avengers: Doomsday.

Bringing Back The New Mutants Can Finally Do The 2020 Movie & Its Characters Justice

Fox Failed The New Mutants In Their Live-Action Debut

The New Mutants team escaping

The New Mutants was an abject failure for Fox and Disney at the very end of the once-successful X-Men movie franchise. The movie grossed only $49.2 million worldwide on a budget of up to $80 million, and has an approval rating of only 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. The New Mutants was a casualty of Disney’s acquisition of Fox, which was finalized in 2019, but these iconic Marvel characters deserved more than being just a rushed job. Some of these casting choices (not all of them) were excellent, so Marvel Studios has the perfect opportunity to redeem them in Avengers: Doomsday.

It would be brilliant to see Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Heaton, both huge stars, reprise their roles in the MCU proper, while Maisie Williams’ portrayal of Wolfsbane was also praised. These actors deserve more time with their characters, perhaps even getting the chance to make them more comic-accurate, more heroic and potentially even setting the stage to mark their permanent returns as these heroes in the MCU. MCU-ifying these characters in Avengers: Doomsday could show just how great they are, and allow them to finally get justice after Fox’s failures.
