One Of The Minecraft Movie Director’s Favorite Easter Eggs Is A Tribute To Iconic YouTuber Who Got Similar Game Tribute

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for A Minecraft Movie!A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess has opened up about how one of his favorite Easter eggs is a tribute to an iconic YouTuber who received a similar tribute in the game. The cast of A Minecraft Movie mostly consists of established actors, such as Jack Black portraying Steve and Jason Momoa playing Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. However, the movie also featured a mulтιтude of cameos from famous Minecraft YouTubers, those being DanTDM, Aphmau, Mumbo Jumbo, and LDShadowLady. However, another YouTuber was acknowledged in another Easter egg referencing the game’s history.

Speaking with Collider, Hess explained one of his favorite Easter eggs in A Minecraft Movie is the appearance of a pig wearing a golden crown, referencing the in-game skin of deceased YouTuber Technoblade. The director explained how star Sebastian Hansen, who plays Henry, told him about the YouTuber, who died of cancer in 2022. This led to the inclusion of a short scene reminiscent of a similar tribute to him seen in the Minecraft game. Check out what Hess had to say below:

One of my favorite Easter eggs came from Sebastian, who plays Henry. When we were prepping the film, he was like, “Look, there’s this amazing Minecraft player named Technoblade who pᴀssed away, and I would love to be able to honor him somehow in the film.” We were like, “Oh my goodness, of course.” So we spoke with our design team, and there’s a really, really sweet, special nod to Technoblade in the film that is really cool.

What A Minecraft Movie’s Technoblade Tribute Says About The Adaptation

The Film Aimed To Honor The Video Game’s History

A Minecraft Movie‘s Easter eggs include multiple references to the game itself, from a rare-spawning Spider Jockey to the characters using fireworks while flying with Elytras. However, things get somewhat somber when a pig with a crown shows up, causing Henry to ask, “Is he some kind of king?Steve replies with, “That’s a legend, referencing how remembered Technoblade is in the gaming community. It makes for one of the more emotional moments in the film, which spends most of its time prioritizing its comedy over its drama.

This isn’t the first time Technoblade has been referenced by an official product in the franchise, either. The game itself added a temporary launch screen following his pᴀssing, which included a pig with a crown. While the page was removed in the game’s next update, splash text reading “Technoblade never dies!” became a permanent part of the game. While A Minecraft Movie ends on its own terms with a story befitting its comedic nature, its tribute to the YouTuber cements him in the history of the game for all time.

While the moment honoring Technoblade was short, the somber tone makes it understandable as to why it was Hess’ favorite Easter egg in the movie. It’s both a change of pace compared to the rest of A Minecraft Movie while cementing the YouTuber as an important part of the series’ history. The fact it was done at all emphasizes the film’s goal of paying homage to the video games’ history, including aspects outside the game itself.

As of writing, A Minecraft Movie has earned $301 million worldwide against a $150 million budget.
