Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon & New Hiccup Actor Buzz Grows With Glowing Review From Star Nick Frost

The upcoming How to Train Your Dragon remake has already earned the love of Nick Frost. The actor stars as Gobber in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie, which will be released on June 13. Frost appears alongside Mason Thames (Hiccup), Nico Parker (Astrid), Gerard Butler (Stoic), and Julian Dennison (Fishlegs). This movie comes as the latest live-action remake of a beloved animated classic, and it will debut in theaters just a few weeks after Disney’s Lilo & Sтιтch remake releases on May 23.

Frost has already seen a complete cut of the movie, and he was more than willing to discuss it at his panel with Simon Pegg at AwesomeCon. After ScreenRant‘s Joe Deckelmeier, the panel’s moderator, questioned Frost about the upcoming film, Frost described it as “beautiful” and “amazing. While he found it challenging to perform in front of so many crew members, he was stunned that Thames adapted so quickly. Check out his detailed explanation below:

I can confirm I’m in that. Yeah, they just put it [the beard] on. I haven’t even got a beard. We sH๏τ last year in Belfast, which was amazing. If you are lucky enough, like Simon and I, to have a career that spans 20-odd years, you go from doing little films for a tiny budget, and you’ve got to shoot it really quick in 20 days. You do like 20 pages of the script today, and there’s a real joy to that. You just shoot. “Let’s just get it done!” And then the opposite to that is you do a film like Dragon, where sometimes you shoot a sentence in a day. [Laughs] You’ve got so much time, and there’s a real joy to both of those things.

So, I spent a lot of last year doing Dragon, and it was just beautiful, and it was amazing. When you walk onto the set, there are 500 Vikings as extras, and there are people with huge dragon costumes. It’s just amazing, as a fan. It’s not lost on me that I get to do that. It’s also really f–king terrifying to act in front of 500 people. It’s really frightening, and I found that it kind of keeps you on your toes and stuff.

But what I want to say is I got to work with Mason Thames, who I’d seen in The Black Phone stuff. He’s only 16, and he was amazing. I loved being on set with him, and anything I did in terms of improvisation, he’d be like, “Yeah, let’s do it.” He just soaks it up, and it was just impressive. I saw it last week. They screened it for me. I’m kind of a big deal. [Laughs] It was amazing. I went with my wife, and we just came out having had a really good time.

What Frost’s Comments Mean For The How To Train Your Dragon Remake

This Is A Glowing Early Review

Toothless and Hiccup touching for the first time in the How to Train Your Dragon live-action.

Frost previously starred in Shaun of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, and Ice Age: Continental Drift, so he has not had too much experience with live-action blockbusters, but his perspective is fascinating. After all, Frost’s comments are an early sign that the How to Train Your Dragon remake could match some of the high expectations that the Super Bowl trailer created. The special effects already appear to be stunning, as both the dragons and the setting perfectly match the recent animated classic.

A How To Train Your Dragon 2 live-action remake is already in development and is set to be released on June 11, 2027.

Frost’s praise for Thames is an especially exciting sign, given that the young actor’s performance is an essential part of the movie. Thames’ Hiccup often shares scenes with no one but a CGI dragon, making the role exceptionally difficult. If Thames can excel as Hiccup, then this movie should easily find success. The trailer has already proved to be divisive, as the movie appears to be a sH๏τ-for-sH๏τ remake. Good performances can distract from some of the controversy, but Thames is going to be the only actor in a position to deliver a portrayal that can elevate the entire movie.

Our Take On Frost’s Love For How To Train Your Dragon

Keep Expectations Steady

While it is excellent to hear Frost’s love for the movie, it is also important to remember that Frost is a member of How to Train Your Dragon‘s cast, so he will benefit if the movie is successful. Consequently, it is only natural that he would praise the final product, especially if he hopes to star in other blockbuster productions in the future. Frost could certainly be giving his honest appraisal of the movie, but it is difficult to judge until the How to Train Your Dragon remake’s official reviews begin pouring in.
