“It Was Just My Name, It Wasn’t Exactly Gambit:” Channing Tatum Addresses Casting In Avengers: Doomsday, Hints He May Not Play Gambit

Channing Tatum jokingly suggests he won’t reprise his MCU Gambit role from ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite the cancelation of Fox’s Gambit solo movie, Channing Tatum fulfilled his dream of playing a live-action Gambit on the big screen in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, where Tatum’s Gambit fought Cᴀssandra Nova’s army alongside other pruned variants. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s ending doesn’t explicitly reveal Gambit survived Alioth in the Void, but it’s made clear that the resistance team made it out alive.

Speaking to Extra at CinemaCon 2025, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine star Channing Tatum jokes he may not play Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday. Channing Tatum was one of the names revealed in Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast announcement, leading fans to deduce that Tatum’s Gambit would appear alongside other X-Men actors in the upcoming Phase 6 movie. However, Tatum also jokes that he may only use the chair from Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast announcement to watch the movie. Read Channing Tatum’s full comments below

“Personally, all I was guaranteed was a chair. They said that I have a chair, and I can at least watch the movie from the chair. You know, and it was just my name, it wasn’t exactly Gambit. So, I work in the world of just like, of binary yes or no’s, and I’ve only been guaranteed so far a chair to watch the movie in, so that’s where I’m at.”

What Channing Tatum’s Gambit Return Comments Mean

Channing Tatum’s Joke Comments Bring Up An Overlooked Point About Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast

Channing Tatum jokes that Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast announcement revealed all the actors appearing in the Phase 6 movie, but not their characters. Tatum may be trying to underplay Gambit’s role in Avengers: Doomsday, as ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine never confirmed Gambit was able to exit the Void, nor did it suggest where Gambit could go next. Since all other X-Men actors in Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast come from Fox’s original X-Men trilogy, Channing Tatum’s return in Avengers: Doomsday raises many questions about the plot, especially considering that Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, Jennifer Garner, and Wesley Snipes are all missing from Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast at the moment.

Although Channing Tatum may only be joking that there’s a chance he won’t play Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday, his comments do serve as a reminder that the multiverse opens many possibilities most fans may not consider at first. Just like Robert Downey Jr. is set to play Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man, any actor confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast could be playing a new variant of a different character. Chris Evans also returned in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, but he played a Human Torch variant instead of Steve Rogers. Likewise, Channing Tatum playing a brand-new character in Avengers: Doomsday falls within the realm of possibility.

Channing Tatum’s return alongside the original X-Men cast opens the door for speculation. If Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman don’t join Avengers: Doomsday soon, that would suggest Tatum’s Gambit will be brought directly from the Void while Earth-10005’s mutant heroes remain unaware of the Avengers’s fight against Doctor Doom. Otherwise, the X-Men variants who will fight Doctor Doom alongside the Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday could have their own Gambit, who’d be a second Gambit variant also played by Channing Tatum.
