Ewan McGregor’s $197M Fantasy Box Office Bomb Climbing Netflix Charts 12 Years Later

Ewan McGregor‘s 2013 fantasy feature is finding new life on streaming. The Scottish actor is most recognizable for his role in the Star Wars franchise, where he took on the role of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy. He also led his own limited Disney+ series in 2022. In his other notable roles, McGregor also played the тιтular role in 2018’s Christopher Robin and portrayed Lumiere in the live-action Beauty and the Beast in 2017.

Outside the fantasy genre, McGregor has also appeared in Moulin Rouge, Birds of Prey, and Doctor Sleep. His career has extended to the small screen as well, starring in Fargo season 3 in 2018 as Ray and Emmit Stussy, two brothers who are dragged into a world of crime. McGregor’s dual roles in Fargo would earn him a Golden Globe for Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

Jack The Giant Slayer Is Rising Up The Netflix Ranks

McGregor Starred In The Action-Oriented Fairytale Reimagining

In 2013, McGregor starred in Jack the Giant Slayer and played Elmont, a celebrated warrior who defends the kingdom of Cloister from the tyranny of giants. Within the movie, Elmond warms to the efforts of Nicholas Hoult’s young peasant Jack after Princess Isabel (Eleanor Tomlinson) is abducted by giants. Jack the Giant Slayer also features Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Bill Nighy as the voice of General Fallon, the leader of the Giants. Upon release, Jack the Giant Slayer earned mixed reviews from critics.

Now, Netflix has offered the fantasy movie a second chance. According to the service’s daily Top 10 chart, Jack the Giant Slayer has climbed to #7 in the United States as of April 6. The $197 million box office flop may have been unable to earn anything beyond a meager profit, but the movie is currently ranked ahead of Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and Draft Day. Top of the chart for April 6 is One of Them Days.

Despite its plot and special effects earning criticism in reviews at the time, one element that has earned Jack the Giant Slayer praise is the performances of its cast. Alongside the ever-popular McGregor, the stars are all very strong. Particularly with Hoult, the actor is in the middle of an impressive string of projects currently. He earned back-to-back strong reviews with Juror No. 2 and Nosferatu, and he’s a part of one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, Superman. Because of that, he may be fueling Jack the Giant Slayer‘s resurgence.
