A Minecraft Movie’s Cameos Explained

Includes SPOILERS for A Minecraft Movie’s post-credit scenes.

As is the case with most IP-based movies, A Minecraft Movie has several cameos for game players and movie fans to enjoy. The film is based on one of the most popular video games ever made, and with that comes a heavy weight of expectation to feature nods to the fanbase of the IP. For example, A Minecraft Movie’s soundtrack includes tunes like “Pigstep,” as well as the original game soundtrack, providing a sense of familiarity despite the film’s story taking on a life of its own.

A Minecraft Movie’s cast is led by stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and it’s directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre). With those names in mind, one might expect the film to be a wild, exhilarating ride, but that would be understating it. The 2025 video game adaptation is packed with not only Minecraft nods but other cultural homages, movie references, and more. The cameos include famous actors, as well as those involved with the making of the Minecraft game.

One Of Minecraft’s Creators Makes A Cameo In The Movie

Jens Bergensten AKA “Jeb” Has A Brief Cameo

To gamers, Minecraft’s two leading creators are known as Notch and Jeb. In real life, these men are Markus Persson and Jens Bergensten, respectively. In 2014, Markus Persson sold his share of Mojang, the company behind Minecraft, to Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Jens Bergensten remained on board and took full control upon Persson’s departure. He’s currently the CCO of Mojang, earning him a brief appearance in the film adaptation.

In one of the film’s subplots, Jennifer Coolidge’s character forms a romantic relationship with a Villager who travels to the real world from the Overworld. They have their first date at a restaurant, where Jens Bergensten can be seen in the background. Notably, the scene also shows Coolidge’s character making a joke about how she thinks the Villager is Swedish, referring to the nationality of Bergensten and Persson. It’s a quick gag played for laughs, but it’s also a reference.

Mojang Creative Director Torfi Frans Ólafsson Also Cameos At The End

Torfi Frans Ólafsson Can Be Seen In The Background

Torfi Frans Ólafsson is the Senior Creative Director for Minecraft at Microsoft, who’s been working at the company since 2018. He directed Minecraft Earth and also contributed as a producer for A Minecraft Movie, helping as a “creative liaison” between the game developers and the filmmakers, helping to ensure a faithful depiction of the beloved тιтle. Ólafsson was, in turn, given a cameo in A Minecraft Movie’s ending, where he appeared as one of the students in Natalie’s self-defense class. His work might not be as recognized as Bergensten’s, but he’s been vital in the game’s recent years.

Matt Berry Has A Voice Cameo As A Villager In The Mid-Credits Scene

Matt Berry Is In The Mid-Credits Scene

Matt Berry is a beloved actor and comedian who’s best known for roles in British comedy shows like The IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh. In recent years, he’s worked in voice acting roles for тιтles like The Wild Robot, The Simpsons, and The Book of Boba Fett. His resume was perfect for a minor role in A Minecraft Movie, and he absolutely kills it in the shocking and mildly unnerving mid-credits scene, where the Villager dating Jennifer Coolidge begins to speak.

Matt Berry’s voice role in A Minecraft Movie is purely for comedic purposes, ripping off the running joke regarding the noises made by Minecraft villagers. Berry provides a posh British voice, subverting one’s expectations of the ordinarily flat Villagers. The extra treat of this scene is seeing Jennifer Coolidge, another beloved actor, try her hand at the Villager sound effect, showing how the two are learning each other’s languages.

Kate McKinnon Has An Uncredited Cameo As The Voice Of Alex

Kate McKinnon Is In The After-Credits Scene

Just as Steve is vital to the Minecraft тιтle, Alex is equally important as the female counterpart. Alex is one of the default skins players can choose from and the second to be introduced in the game. The film’s post-credits scene shows Jack Black’s Steve returning to his childhood home, where he is introduced to a red-headed woman named Alex, causing immediate celebration from game players with the prospect of a sequel centered around her.

While it’s unclear who will play Alex if that sequel transpires, actress and comedian Kate McKinnon, who’s best known for her roles on Saturday Night Live and the Barbie movie, offered her talents to the voice lines. This is perhaps the most exciting cameo in A Minecraft Movie, not only bringing a famous name to an iconic video game character but also setting up the franchise’s future.
