Gerard Butler’s 18% RT Disaster Movie Finds New Life On Netflix 7 Years Later

A Gerard Butler disaster movie that was a critical and commercial failure has now found a new life on streaming. Butler is a Scottish actor who began to break out in the mid-2000s with roles in widely known projects including the Phantom in 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera and King Leonidas in 300. Since then, he has gone on to star in a number of notable тιтle, including the Has Fallen movies, in which he plays Secret Service agent Mike Banning, and the Den of Thieves movies, which star him as Detective Nick O’Brien.

The star has participated in movies from many genres, including family movies like Nim’s Island and the DreamWorks animated franchise How to Train Your Dragon, as well as romantic comedies such as The Ugly Truth and The Bounty Hunter. However, Gerard Butler action movies are perhaps the most common. He has appeared in more than two dozen installments in the genre, beginning with a small role in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies and later starring in тιтles such as Law Abiding Citizen, Machine Gun Preacher, and Greenland.

It Is Climbing The U.S. Top 10 Chart

An action-adjacent Gerard Butler тιтle, the 2017 disaster movie Geostorm, is now rising up a major streaming chart. The movie, which was directed and co-written by Dean Devlin, stars Butler as Jake Lawson, a satellite expert who is called in to help when the satellite network that controls the world’s weather in the near future goes haywire and causes a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly global storm. The movie, which earned a dismal 18% Rotten Tomatoes score and lost Warner Bros. $71.6 million at the box office, also features Abbie Cornish, Eugenio Derbez, Ed Harris, Andy García, and Apartment 7A star Jim Sturgess.

Dean Devlin produced and co-wrote the iconic 1996 disaster movie Independence Day.

Now, Geostorm has begun to trend on Netflix in the United States. After joining the streaming platform on April 1, it debuted at No. 4 on their daily Top 10 chart of the most-watched movies in the region on April 2. It rose to No. 3 the following day and has remained in that position for four consecutive days. At the time of writing, the only movies above it on the chart are the new Netflix original romance movie The Life List at No. 2 and the hit 2025 Keke Palmer comedy One of Them Days at No. 1.

What This Means For Geostorm

It Could Benefit Gerard Butler In One Major Way

While the fact that Geostorm was a commercial failure likely means that a strong streaming resurgence will not result in a sequel, the fact that it is connecting with audiences seven years later could still benefit Gerard Butler. He is set to reprise his role as Stoick the Vast in the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake, which is DreamWorks’ first such remake and the star’s first time portraying the role on camera. Any increased interest in his body of work could help boost the project.
