The MCU may already be hinting at Peter Parker and MJ’s eventual fate just by confirming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With the fourth film in the MCU’s Spider-Man series set to release next year, fans were eagerly anticipating what the official name would be. Marvel finally confirmed that it will be called Brand New Day, signifying a departure from the previous “Home” trilogy. It makes sense as this film will mark a new chapter for Tom Holland’s Peter in both his personal life and in his time as Spider-Man.
The MCU’s Peter is currently in a tough position after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. To make up for his mistake of allowing variants to enter his universe, Peter directs Doctor Strange to cast a spell that will wipe the world’s memory of Peter Parker. However, in doing so, it also means that everyone who Peter cares about also doesn’t remember him. It’s unfortunately the price he has to pay but just the name Brand New Day seems somewhat hopeful in tone, possibly inferring that Peter will manage to get by in his new life.
Spider-Man: No Way Home Left A Major Cliffhanger Open When It Comes To Peter & MJ
Peter made the tough choice of going through with the memory wipe, which would include his girlfriend MJ and best friend Ned. As tempted as he might’ve been to put some clauses in the spell, messing with Doctor Strange’s work was what caused the chaos of No Way Home in the first place. Peter promises that he will come to find them and explain, but he doesn’t end up following through on that in the film. In the end, Peter observes MJ and Ned from a distance. He does interact with MJ, but he acts like a stranger to her.
Peter and MJ’s ending is intentionally left on a major cliffhanger. The studio likely wanted to save their reunion for a project where they’d have more time to flesh it out, and the decision has paid off considering how Holland and Zendaya’s real-life chemistry is now a major draw for audiences. Many have already been speculating on how the actors’ MCU reunion will play out, with many hoping for the best-case scenario in which MJ fully accepts Peter back into her life. Unfortunately for some fans, the official announcement of Brand New Day doesn’t bode well for their relationship.
Brand New Day’s Comic Story Doesn’t Bode Well For Peter & MJ’s MCU Future
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is likely a reference to the Marvel Comics run of the same тιтle from 2008. Peter and Mary Jane Watson are married, but following the events of the previous storyline “One More Day”, the memories of their marriage are erased. Peter makes the tough choice to sacrifice his relationship with Mary Jane to Mephisto in order to save Aunt May’s life. However, it’s far more tragic for Peter and Mary Jane than simply forgetting their marriage. Instead, they are embedded with the memory that they simply broke up, and “Brand New Day” explores the aftermath.
Marvel’s decision to name the upcoming film after the comic storyline has to be an intentional one, since they know that fans will make the connection.
Peter and MJ’s MCU future may be looking bleak based on the comics. Marvel’s decision to name the upcoming film after the comic storyline has to be an intentional one, since they know that fans will make the connection. The fact that Zendaya hasn’t been confirmed for a major part in Spider-Man: Brand New Day combined with Sadie Sink’s recent casting could mean that the studio is going in a different romantic direction for Peter. It wouldn’t be the Holland and Zendaya reunion that fans want, but with the film over a year away, it’s still worth holding out hope.
