A Minecraft Movie Global Box Office Debut Already Makes It One Of The Highest-Grossing Movies Of The Year

A Minecraft Movie has had an explosive global opening weekend. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks, it follows a mismatched group of people being transported to Overworld, the land from the iconic тιтular video game. The Minecraft Movie release was preceded by the movie breaking the record for the most ticket pre-sales for a PG-rated movie in 2025 so far.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Sunday morning, A Minecraft Movie is projected to earn a 3-day total of $301 million by the end of its opening weekend at the worldwide box office. That total comes from $144 million earned in international markets added to the $157 million it has earned at the domestic box office, which sees it breaking the record for the highest-grossing debut for a video game adaptation.

This global debut is enough to make it the third highest-grossing movie of 2025 over the course of a single weekend, only falling behind Captain America: Brave New World ($410.4 million) and the Chinese animated smash hit Ne Zha 2 ($1.898 billion).

What This Means For A Minecraft Movie

The Movie Is Set To Be A Smash Hit

This staggering global opening weekend is impressive, but it was also necessary, because the movie had a huge hurdle to overcome. Because the reported budget for A Minecraft Movie is a whopping $150 million, this means that it most likely has a break-even point of $375 million or more. However, given the fact that it has already doubled its budget in the span of just three days, reaching this milestone seems well within its power and will almost certainly take place before the end of its sophomore weekend, if not sooner.

Movies typically need to earn back two and a half times their budgets at the box office, because theaters keep half of ticket sales and publicity costs are not factored into production budgets.

In fact, A Minecraft Movie seems well on its way to becoming a billion-dollar movie. Its opening weekend saw it break the record previously set by 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is currently the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. If it continues on its current trajectory and lands above Super Mario on the all-time chart, Minecraft could potentially reach an enormous total of $1.46 billion by the end of its worldwide theatrical run.

Our Take On The Minecraft Movie Global Debut

It Could Be Unstoppable

One factor that could hamper the movie’s rise is the fact that A Minecraft Movie reviews have earned it a middling 49% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this may not prove to be an issue, as its audience score on the same platform is a far superior 87%. Additionally, The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $1.36 billion in spite of a Rotten 59% score, which shows that the 2025 тιтle has a path toward success in spite of its critical reception.
