Soulm8te, a spinoff of the hit horror movie M3GAN, has a similar premise as Companion, which points to a burgeoning Hollywood trend. Hollywood has released movies about evil robots for a long time, but with the rise of artificial intelligence, these films are more relevant than ever. In 2022, M3GAN was released and became a huge hit. The story of the horror film follows a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be a child’s best friend. However, of course, M3GAN eventually turns on her owners.

Reviews for M3GAN were great, with Screen Rant’s own Patrice Witherspoon giving it a score of 7 out of 10. Additionally, M3GAN has an impressive score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). Since the first film was such a critical and commercial success, M3GAN 2.0 was confirmed to be in development very quickly, and will be released this year. Additionally, the upcoming Soulm8te will be the first spinoff film in the horror franchise and will focus on a new robot companion. Interestingly, Soulm8te sounds very similar to Companion, one of the best horror movies of 2025.

While the film won’t be released until January 2026, footage of Soulm8te was shown at CinemaCon 2025. Footage from CinemaCon doesn’t get released online, but Screen Rant was in attendance at the event to provide details about the upcoming horror film. The footage of Soulm8te shows a robot being delivered to an apartment. After this, it doesn’t take long for this robot to become obsessed with her owner, and is quick to threaten and harm anyone who comes close to him.

While Soulm8te will likely portray its robot as more evil, it has a very similar premise as Companion. In Companion, Jack Quaid’s character, Josh, purchases an android that is built for human companionship to act like his girlfriend. In the film, Josh actually ends up framing his android, who is played by Sophie Thatcher, for murder, which forces her to fight for her own survival. Soulm8te and Companion will likely take their stories in different directions, but it is undeniable that they sound like very similar films.

Hollywood Is Making More Movies About Human/Robot Relationships

Soulm8te and Companion are both movies which explore relationships between humans and robots. As AI is becoming a bigger topic of discussion, it makes sense that Hollywood is making more movies exploring the dynamic between humans and robots. In addition to these two films, Megan Fox also played a robot in 2024’s Subservience, another horror film about the relationship between a human and a robot.

While Subservience portrays its robot as evil, viewers interestingly root for Iris, the android in Companion. While not many details about Soulm8te are currently known, it is likely that its robot will be portrayed as an evil killer, just like M3GAN was. Moving forward, it should be interesting to see how Hollywood portrays robots in films. While Soulm8te, Companion, and Subservience are early films in this new Hollywood trend, it’s likely that many more films in the coming years will explore relationships between humans and robots.
