As Excited As I Am About Star Wars’ Next TV Show, There’s Still One Rogue One Spinoff I’m Desperate To See

Andor season 2 is on the horizon and looks to be better than we ever could have imagined, but there’s still one Rogue One: A Star Wars Story spin-off I’m desperate to see. Andor season 2 seems to be filling in many of the gaps left in our knowledge of the end of the Empire’s reign, and will show how the Rebel Alliance officially formed. From the Andor trailer footage, it’s clear that the show’s final season will come with emotional gut punches paired with visually stunning set pieces.

It’s known that Andor season 2 will lead directly into the events of Rogue One, with many characters from the film returning to Star Wars, including Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO. It’s unclear whether other characters, such as Jyn Erso or Chirrut Imwe, will make cameo appearances. It’s rumored that Andor will return to Jedha, which is where Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus joined Cᴀssian Andor and Jyn Erso on their quest to get the Death Star plans.

Jedha, however, holds so much more significance than simply being a familiar Rogue One location. The lore within this planet is immense, and Star Wars has only scratched the surface of it so far. There’s so much potential within the planet, but even more so within Chirrut, Baze, and the group to which they belong – or, in Baze’s case, used to belong.

The Guardians Of The Whills Are Still A Mystery, 9 Years After Rogue One

Andor Might Reveal More About Them

In Rogue One, the Guardians of the Whills were introduced as a religious order of monks founded hundreds of years before the events of Rogue One and the original Star Wars trilogy. Though Rogue One officially brought the Guardians of the Whills into canon, they were actually meant to be a part of Luke Skywalker’s story in the original Star Wars film (later reтιтled A New Hope). In fact, the story of Star Wars was supposed to be told through the Whills.

The Guardians of the Whills were eventually turned into what we know today as the Force. There isn’t much known about the Guardians of the Whills in current Star Wars canon, though we do know that they are ᴀssociated with protecting the kyber crystals on the planet Jedha. The Guardians of the Whills did their best to protect the Kyber Temple on Jedha from the Empire, but in Rogue One, it was shown that the Guardians had failed, as the Empire took the kyber crystals in order to power the Death Star.

Donnie Yen Is Willing To Return To Star Wars – Could Jiang Wen Be Convinced Too?

It Could Be Another Rogue One Cameo

Chirrut Îmwe actor and martial arts legend Donnie Yen has stated that he’d be willing to return to Star Wars and maybe even reunite with some of his Rogue One castmates. Chirrut was best known as the blind Force-devotee who fought with a wooden bow. The character was best known for repeating the phrase “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me.” There’s been no confirmation of Yen’s return, though with Andor going back to Jedha, the monk could make a cameo appearance.

Jedha has also appeared in the Jedi: Survivor video games.

It’s unclear if Donnie Yen would be unwilling to return to Star Wars without his onscreen partner, Jiang Wen, who played Baze Malbus. It’s possible that Yen would refuse to reprise his role as Chirrut without Wen’s Baze. However, it’s also possible for Star Wars to introduce other monks ᴀssociated with the Guardians of the Whills. Either way, it’d be good to learn a bit more about these monks, whether it’s from Chirrut, Baze, or someone else.

It’s About Time We Get An Explanation

It’s possible that Andor will serve as a launchpad for spinoffs, especially with season 2 supposedly heading to Jedha, though it’s not currently clear what those spinoffs will center around. Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has even said that Andor will pave the way for new, experimental Star Wars shows.

With Gilroy arguing that Andor season 2 isn’t just a prequel to Rogue One, it could mean a new chapter in Star Wars television is yet to come.

With that in mind, a show or miniseries that explores the origins of the Guardians of the Whills’ origins, history, and future after the destruction of Jedha seems plausible. With Gilroy arguing that Andor season 2 isn’t just a prequel to Rogue One, it could mean a new chapter in Star Wars television is yet to come. It seems that Andor is being set up to do many experimental things in its final season, but will also continue Star Wars’ story and open the franchise up to a whole new kind of storytelling.
