“I Don’t Cry That Much”: James Gunn Reveals The SH๏τ From The Superman Trailer That Made Him Cry During Filming

James Gunn admits one Superman scene made him cry when he was shooting the DCU movie. James Gunn’s Superman cast is led by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, who’ll play the latest iteration of Superman and Lois Lane on the big screen. While the two DC characters don’t seem to know each other at first, Superman and Lois Lane’s romance will bloom rapidly and become central to Superman‘s plot, as suggested by the trailers.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Superman director James Gunn recalls crying while shooting the scene where David Corenswet’s Superman and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane kiss while flying, which is featured in the trailer. Gunn confesses he “got teary-eyed” and “started crying” when he saw the actors suspended in the air performing the scene. Rachel Brosnahan adds that John Murphy’s score was playing during filming, and both Brosnahan and David Corenswet joked that the scene wasn’t comfortable to film, as the harnesses were quite тιԍнт. Read James Gunn’s full comments below:

“I got teary-eyed, I’ve got to admit. If you remember, it was the one time I cried and I don’t cry that much. (…) I was moved by the scene. I started crying, and Rachel’s like, ‘how did it go?’ and I was like, ‘look at that’. And it was so beautiful. It’s the sH๏τ that’s in the movie, that’s in the trailer, that made me cry.”

What James Gunn’s Comments About The Superman Scene That Made Him Cry Mean

Superman And Lois’s Romantic Subplot Will Be A Highlight Of James Gunn’s Superman

James Gunn has proved his talent for eye-watering scenes in the superhero genre multiple times. Yondu Udonta’s death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Rocket Raccoon’s origin story and brush with death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Chris Smith’s childhood flashbacks in Peacemaker season 1 are some of the most emotional moments in James Gunn’s comic book projects. James Gunn’s Superman will likely feature more than one of these moments.

Romantic subplots have been a staple of comic books and comic book adaptations since their inception, but few comic book couples are as iconic as Superman and Lois Lane. While Superman‘s main conflict, action scenes, humor, VFX, and connection to the rest of the DCU’s first chapter will be key factors in the movie’s success, the chemistry between David Corenswet’s Superman and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane will be essential. After Superman, Superman and Lois’ relationship will continue to evolve in other DCU projects.
