Zootopia 2 CinemaCon Footage: Nick & Judy Are In Partners’ Therapy As They Jump Into A New Case

Disney shares the first footage for Zootopia 2 at CinemaCon. Slated to release in November of this year, the long-awaited sequel to Disney’s hit 2016 movie will see the return of unconventional partners Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). Now properly working together on the force, Judy and Nick team up to solve another animal-centric mystery, which revolves around the new snake character Gary (Ke Huy Quan). Zootopia 2 also brings back Shakira as Gazelle, the in-universe pop superstar.

During Disney’s CinemaCon presentation, where ScreenRant was in attendance, the studio unveiled new footage for Zootopia 2 and brought some extra news. Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson has joined the cast as Dr. Fuzzby, Nick and Judy’s therapist. As for the footage, check out the full breakdown below:

It begins at the police station. Nick and Judy are with a police therapist who focuses on mismatched partners. Nick and Judy are apparently struggling to work together. They have been official partners for one week – and Judy thinks that they are doing fine, but the therapist breaks down her response, saying that she answered first, quickly, and didn’t allow Nick to respond. The therapist says that Nick is emotionally shut down. One of the other animals in the room start “talking” – Nick and Judy then look at each other and the clip ends.

A second clip revealed:

Opens on a sign saying Welcome To Marsh Market. Looks like Louisiana. Nick and Judy arrive and follow a local who is telling them about the area. The local talks to a sea lion and they go back and forth saying, “Hey bub.” All Nick and Judy wanted to know is where the snake (Gary, voiced by Ke Huy Quan) is.

What This Means For Zootopia 2

Judy And Nick’s Partnership Will Take A Major Turn

The first Zootopia introduced a vibrant and delightful universe where animals lived alongside each other, serving up the usual Disney whimsy alongside a socially thematic story. It isn’t yet clear whether the sequel will do the same, but the clips shown at CinemaCon indicate the movie will double-down on some of the strongest elements from its predecessor: the mystery, and Nick and Judy’s partnership.

The opposites-attract friendship between the fox and the bunny was the emotional throughline of the first film, and it’s clear Zootopia 2 will explore that on a deeper level now that they’re working together on a more regular basis. The therapy scene in particular promises plenty of humor and a new side to the characters’ relationship. It should add more stakes as Judy and Nick plunge into another case that will surely reveal new sides to the тιтular metropolis.

Our Take On The Zootopia 2 Clips

Zootopia 2 Has Big Shoes To Fill, And I Think It Can

Nick sneering at Judy in Zootopia

I remember being caught off-guard by how much I, along with many others, enjoyed Zootopia back in 2016, and I’m hopeful the sequel can live up to expectations. The clips screened at CinemaCon sound promising, particularly the therapy session between Nick and Judy. I’m eager to learn more about the mystery involving Gary and excited to hear Quan and Brunson join the talented voice cast. In other words, I think Zootopia 2 is shaping up to be a wonderful addition to Disney’s animated stable.
